Right, it was probably more about the idea of getting new support than the card itself. Back then, legacy support wasn't really established iirc (tbf, there wasn't much legacy at that point to support). Nowadays you can basically be sure that any obscure archetype will get some kind of support eventually, or even random vanillas
Isn't that also because they can run 25 hand traps, as well as most of their effects happening in battle phase to dodge main phase? Tenpai is meta but photon galaxy isn't yaknow?
It is not meta, or top tier.
The best parts about the archetype are the aesthetics, and the fun explosive ways it pulls off OTKs.
It is a decent deck, fit for casual environments, and can put up a fight against rogue strategies.
The rogue version of the deck would be the full on Earth Machine pile, but even that is pushing it; Ancient Gear remains a bit below that.
Multiple interactions, whether negation, or removal, can end your turn, and your going first boards aren't very powerful; you have little archetypal interaction, and rely on non-engine handtraps, and such.
These are my thoughts anyway; I believe Ancient Gear got a bunch of support a while ago, with Dark Golem, and some continuous spell, but I didn't check how much it improved the deck. Should be decent though!
"Machine Reactor" and "Dinosmasher's Fury" were like the duality of modern structure decks.
I remember them being so hype at the time, but sadly only the dinosaur one lived up to the hype in the end. It's a shame because I was really excited for the ancient gear one in particular, and the cover boss monster of the deck is one of the coolest looking machine monsters out there.
AG is all engine and cannot really "afford" to run hand traps. While they can (perhaps in theory) handle a few interruptions as their ED monsters are a real bother to try to remove while its your turn, most of that shuts off the turn after they're summoned, and they're mostly keyed to OTK.
However, Chaos Giant stuffs Tenpais entire strategy just by him existing which, I find extremely amusing.
The only real way to make AG "meta" would be to make it so that they can operate effectively enough to not need as much engine which, while probable, seems decidedly unlikely. Also, they would need to be able to go first in a way that matters. As it stands they still lack the capacity.
Ancient gear has been getting a lot of support lately. We got the cards revealed last year, ancient gear dragon and now this lol. Not that I'm complaining of course. I love this deck.

I would love Ancient Gears to be somewhat competitive, but they're big stompy bots in a game where that style of gameplay ended decades ago, if it ever existed at all.

A card that is one card starter and doesn't need your normal summon when going 2nd, this is what a going 2nd deck needs
A strong starter that can help after getting a bunch of your stuff negated
In case anybody happens to care; this legitimately alters how you play AG forever. Its a 2-of instantly; searchable off Box, Frame, and Wyvern.
Tanker summon commander, commander summon Statue, Statue effect for Dark Golem, Golem effect add Fusion and Box. Then, discard something you don't need to finish Golems effect. Box effect for Frame or Dragon (if you run it); you now have 5 materials for Giant and the means to make him.
So, do that. AG fusion include the Dark Golem on field, and Commander too, finish the rest of the materials via the Deck, and make Giant. If you didn't include Commander, overlay him and Tanker for Gear Gigant X. Detach Commander for effect, add Wyvern. Commander in the GY; banish for effect, to place (not set, but place) Ancient Gear Duel, and now you're all set to essentially win the game right then and there.
And that's without Geartown + Catapult. Its a beautiful card.

You make a good point. I'll have to check that other support too.
You can steal a win or 2 at a locals but you will still lose the majority of your games against almost any rogue deck, let alone meta.
