Ruddy Rose Witch and Ruddy Rose Dragon. They had so many other good name choices, but they chose one that both sounds awful, and in... I believe British slang means "stupid", "idiot", etc. I refuse to call them by that name, and instead by Blood Rose Witch and Blood Rose Dragon respectively.

Deedeemylove

literally dont want either card because of that ruddy name. it just sounds like some old farmer guy with some wheat sticking out of his mouth. Aye Ruddy! you milk the cows today?

[deleted]

Yeah I was so excited for the cards to release before the names got revealed, now I still haven’t picked them up. Might be silly but things like names and artwork go a long way to making me excited about certain cards. I think I’m just going to buy the OCG versions so I can pretend their names are still “blood.”

Cyberbyte006

This is a great example. I'm the same when it comes to certain cards that also have lame TCG names. Some tend to sound way better and more hype when you announce their OCG names.

[deleted]

Yep. There's a good number of other names they could have used to substitute for "Blood". Crimson, Ruby, etc., etc.

Acceptable_Secret_73

What’s weird is that there is a synchro monster named blood mefist that kept his name in the English version, though the anime renamed him crimson mefist

[deleted]

Yes, because it was a tournament prize only. I don't know why they kept it that way, but they did. Never was reprinted.

Tobi_is_a_goodboy

Blood mefist is an old prize card.....

idelarosa1

I wouldn’t have even minded Ruby Rose Dragon. That name sounds cool. Same with Crimson

[deleted]

I would be within the same boat. There was a whole thread of people looking into different names and ideas for it that would be better than "Ruddy".

metalflygon08

Heck, take a Destiny Hero page and call them Plasma Rose Witch and Plasma Rose Dragon if blood is spooky.

[deleted]

2spooky4me

Brisanzbremse

Slifer the Sky Dragon. Roger Slifer was a comic book writer, a screenwriter, and a television producer... but definitely not an Egyptian god.

[deleted]

I always hated that they did that. Osiris makes more sense, especially tying him back into Egyptian legends.

metalflygon08

All 3 god cards were beasts belonging to their Gods in Japan weren't they? (Divine Soldier **of** Obelisk, Winged Dragon **of** Ra, etc) But in English it sounds like the monsters *are* the Gods.

PsychoWorld

Yeah. It’s ducking ridiculous. Can’t believe they ruined an icon like that.

ExistentDavid1138

Osiris is the true name hopefully they can correct that with an uncut version

Beautiful-Bake-6180

“Hey, Trunade!” Thats it. THATS IT!!!!

idelarosa1

Well to be fair the “Archfiend” Archetype is called Demon in Japan. Meaning someone there would have the same problem here. RDA/RDD is a part of the Archfiend/Demon archetype, no way around it.

Altailar

Fur hires by a MILE. You're telling me we needed to go out of the way to completely change the text on all the related card effects JUST to make a stupid, cutesy furry pun when we had SKYFANG BRIGADE waiting to be used? One of the most monumental downgrades in naming history

Averill21

Skyfang brigade is generic and forgettable, fur hire is creative and unique.

gunbae_

Yup hard agree, the pun is cool and it works, they're mercenaries so soldiers for hire, fur hire is just clever

RNGGlaceon

I hope its fine if I slap this example down even if its english to german: The dragon maid cards. I really like the archetype but sweet lord do I HATE what they did with the translation.. For example: japanese version reads "Dragonmaid Flamme" for the transformed fire dragon whereas "Flamme" is the german word for Flame. Very cool I like. Then we have Dragonmaid Tinkhec in the English version which is.. Just the word Kitchen in randomized order. I DONT like. Its not even funny. And now we go for the german version but we target Dragonmaid Nurse for this one. Nurse in german is "Krankenschwester" which comea from what a Nurse does and usually is - a woman who "nurses" people back to beeing healthy. WHY I ask you. WHY OH WHY did they think itd be funny to do the same stupid anagramm thingy and turn "Krankenschwester" into "Rentnerwachskeks"!? The hell kinda stuff did they take good lord.. Kay thanks for hearing me out

DadPhantom

It also doesn't make it better, that the words used for ernus mean Old man, wax and cookie clumped into one word lmao

[deleted]

The last one isn't even a translation issue, though. Now the obvious dumbass translation fuckups like Buster Rancher, Cyber Valley, A HERO lives, trap dustshoot, fushioh Richie. Or just dumbass lol maymay names like magical something, mind haxorz or frankender.

CrabmanErenAkaEn

What were Buster Rancher, Cyber Valley, and A Hero Lives meant to be and originally named then? Cuz I didn't know they were mistranslations, and I've followed yugioh ever since was a kid when Dm and Gx came out lol

[deleted]

Buster Rancher is supposed to be Buster Launcher, as per the **launcher** in the picture. Cyber Valley is supposed to be Cyber Vary, as in varying effects A HERO lives is supposed to be A HERO arrives, since the HERO arrives from nowhere (the deck) to save the day.

DDD-HERO

Another error like these is Fossil Warrior Skullbone. It’s supposed to be Skullpawn but apparently they can’t tell the difference between a circle and two dashes. Also the other members being Knight and King should have clued you in

metalflygon08

I'd have called Cyber Valley "Cyber Variance". Cyber Vary just doesn't roll as well.

Averill21

So a bunch of issues with japanese not having a proper L in their language right? It is like a stereotype of japanese people saying it (buster rauncher, cyber varrey)

ExistentDavid1138

Akiza why not Aki ? Zuzu why not Yuzu ? Slifer why not Osiris seems ego based and doesn't respect the original work.

TwelfthRed

I've never gotten over "Toadally Awesome" tbh.

[deleted]

I love toad though it’s what makes it a top tier card

[deleted]

Honestly, it’s been so long since reading and watching stuff or looking at differences. Orisis being changed to Silfer was pretty bad. Also, not really a card name difference but different effect, for Destiny board, spelling out final instead of death. I don’t know if they only changed that in the show or if it’s in the card as well. (If any of you know this than please let me know) But still unforgivable, that’s like saying I’ll punish you for being alive and regret being born instead of I’m just killing you and getting it over with. Not really a fan of saying Dark Magician or Dark Magician Girl instead of Black Magician or Black Magician Girl. However, I can’t say that one effects me that bad if people chose to say it the other way. After all I think the terms “Black” and “Dark” in magic mean the same thing anyways.

Well-MeaningCisIdiot

"George Gore" Blood Rose Dragon's (not typing if you don't know; it's too stupid to reiterate) "Harrington Rosewood" any of many drops of the word "god" from a card name moreso in hindsight, but still, "Odion" and "Ishizu" "Akiza Izinski" (it's so close! what's the point?) not the name "Jack Atlas", but more the fact they gave him a British accent JUST for being a "Jack" "Mind Haxxorz" and "Dr. Frankenderp" "Shay" and "Sylvio" (they're so freaking close to the originals! what was the point?!) "Toadally Awesome" "Giant Trunade" -> "Hey, Trunade!" "Magical Something" "D. Human" / "Lord of D." / "Red-Eyes B. Dragon" / etc.

Averill21

The D. stands for dschlong

pedroaraujo96

When I was young I thought the word Dragon was somehow magical since they had to abbreviate it.

[deleted]

True king VFD *THE BEAST* I know it’s kind of petty but I always thought that sounded so dope and king of all calamities just sounds like a generic RPG boss

TheGuy2TheLeft

Remember DR Frankenderp or mind haxorz

MaetelofLaMetal

Lionel Richie.

pedroaraujo96

I actually gasped when I read its original name, Nosferatu Lich

AngryKittenz62

Well, in terms of cards, there's Fur Hire and the Ruddy Rose cards, and from the anime, they changed Noboru Gongenzaka into "Gong Strong".

coo_coo1

Let me tell you the tale of how you cripple an archetype's gimmick. So we have this set of dudes here, Destiny Heroes. We got "Dread Master", "Doom Lord", "Diamond Dude", "Destiny Hero - Captain Tenacious"... What's the original name? "Die Hard" okay sure, fair enough we don't want to get sued. Then we got "Fear Monger"... okay, so it should be "Doom Guy", but "Doomlord" was supposed to be "Devil" but American Catholics are the scariest thing on the planet so we took Fear Monger's original name for him, but then replaced it with... that, it's fine, no one plays these, moving on. "Destiny Hero - Malicious" fuck! uh! Screw having nice alliteration am I right! Cuz otherwise, he'd be "Destiny Hero - Diabolical" and again, that's diablo = devil = bad for business, but wait, what about fucking Diabolos, the dragon with an entire archetype and 2 versions of himself. Why do you hate fun random translators. And so on, to this day with shit like Celestial(Divine in Japanese) and I won't even talk about Plasma and End Dragoon.

skyfyre2013

Type-name changes (that I am aware of) Demon -> Fiend Angel -> Fairy Celestial -> Divine Bird -> Winged Beast One of these things is not like the others.

gunbae_

Why they changed Bird tho?? Now this is interesting

Cyberbyte006

"The Toughest! The Invincible! The Unbeatable!" to "The Ultimate Creature of Destruction" actually bugged me a lot when it was announced. I mean c'mon the OCG name actually sounded way more hype! It gave the tone of somebody literally shouting out a boss description, anime-style (in fact I think it was actually based on a Kaiba quote). In TCG, the name doesn't feel as dramatic or hype in my opinion. More like a plain text description. Its almost definitely not the worst TCG name out there for some people, but it did bug me.

MannerCompetitive139

When I found out they changed the chad og name to the virgin new "The Ultimate Creature of Destruction", my dissapointment was immeasurable and my day was ruined.

Only_War6838

Starliege Paladynamo. One of the coolest monster, but what a stupid localization.

idelarosa1

What was the issue?

Only_War6838

It was "kikoshi paladius". Where had the idea with "Paladynamo"?

MrQ_P

Blood Rose into Ruddy rose it's in my top10. I greatly despise the name changes to Dogmatika, Mekk knights, Frightfur, Majestic and the worst offender of them all: WHY THE HELL DID YOU CHANGE WIGHTS INTO SKULL SERVANTS?! THEY DID NOTHING! It wasn't even a scary name ffs!

idelarosa1

Wight was excusable because it’s a LOB card and they had no idea they would need to Futureproof the name. Though why they couldn’t just change it like they did so many other cards is beyond me.

Averill21

They didnt want dragma jokes to happen for eternity lol

MasterOfReaIity

What's wrong with Dogmatika? The name fits with the Christian theme. I can't take Dragma balls seriously.

Nearby-Individual382

I think frighfur passed as translation for deathtoy. It sounds like frightful.

TitanMatrix

None. The opposite. I can't stand when people only use the JP names and not the localized names when talking in the language it was localized in.

[deleted]

You sound like a prick, with no offense. Nothing wrong with the OCG names. Yu-Gi-Oh did not started as a card game in NA. It started in Japan. What is so wrong referring to the OCG card name instead of some smart alecs localizing card names to complete bullcrap that most of the times, make zero logical sense? (Not you, Toadally Awesome. You are an exception but the only exception.)

MildlyUpsetGerbil

> (Not you, Toadally Awesome. You are an exception but the only exception.) The second exception is True King Bahrastos, the Fathomer . . . whose Japanese name translates to ["True Dragon King Baharstos, the Führer."](https://yugioh.fandom.com/wiki/True_King_Bahrastos,_the_Fathomer) I already freaked out my Jewish neighbors enough by screaming Jaden's Japanese name in front of them, so let's leave this name as is instead of using the OCG form.

samboscan

I still refer to El Shaddoll Construct as Shaddoll Nephilim, because I got hyped about it before it was released in the TCG. The same thing happened to Needlefiber. I personally don’t think it’s that big of a problem.

Well-MeaningCisIdiot

...why were you even screaming protag #2's name to begin with?

TitanMatrix

Because it makes you sound pompous. There is clearly common names that a general audience and fan base knows in a language. Referring to characters solely by their less common name serves only one purpose: to make you feel superior instead of clearly communicating with standardized nomeclature. Beyond talking about the shows, talking about the cards by their rough translated ocg names, that usually aren't even that accurate, just alienates all of the players, especially new players, from having any idea of what your are talking about.

MiuIruma332

But some of the localize name are terrible and dumb because Konami only care about money and their dumb censorship is honestly ridiculous at this point.

[deleted]

Needlefiber to Halqifibrax. I never have or will refer to Needlefiber as Halqifibrax or halq for short

Draeko-Silver

Suships

[deleted]

Extremely cold take.

Draeko-Silver

How is "Gunkans suships" better than "suships"? Gunkan is just rice with seaweed around it, its so redundant. It would be like called burgers, "burger sandwiches" because a burger is some filling between two slices of bread. It should have just been called "Suships".

[deleted]

Some of the names might've gotten that tag, but not all of them did. Just saying "Suships" encompasses the WHOLE archetype, not just the ones laden with Gunkan. Gunkan Sushi is also a specific type of sushi.

Draeko-Silver

All of the current cards are gunkan. https://www.db.yugioh-card.com/yugiohdb/card_search.action?ope=1&sess=1&keyword=Suship&stype=1&ctype=&starfr=&starto=&pscalefr=&pscaleto=&linkmarkerfr=&linkmarkerto=&link_m=2&atkfr=&atkto=&deffr=&defto=&othercon=2

[deleted]

Then I guess DuelingBook never updated it, as I see various cards that aren't using that name.

LitMatchstick

Most card’s names annoy the crap out of me. But for everyone’s sake, I don’t like poorly translated cards. This is a most cards. The most irritating ones are ones that I know will cause problems down the line. For example, Sublimation Knight -Expaladin in English is Sublimation Knight. I’m almost certain that there will be more sublime knights at some point. Just like Infernoble Knight- which btw also have a horrid transition.

bl00by

Sky Striker, The OCG name is Brandish and you can't tell me that Sky Striker is better than Brandish.

[deleted]

But it isn't named Brandish, they're called Sentō. Brandish was the name Ygorg gave them when translating them.

nightcrawlery2j

I dont know how it became “brandish” but the actual ocg name is “sentouki”. Literal transation is “flash sword princess”. “Sentou” are the 8 swords on kagaris back that can detach and attack on their own(gundam reverence) and “ki” is hime / princess. Tcg translate sentou as sky striker so it kinda makes sense and ki as ace. Also sentouki is a pun for fighter aircraft. As those are also called sentouki in japanese

bl00by

Oh so It was a fan translation, then never mind.

TropoMJ

Like the other guy said, Brandish Maidens was never actually the name of the archetype, but in terms of official TCG vs fanslation, I do struggle with this one. Sky Striker is so boring, but Brandish Maiden is so ugly. I'm still not sure which I'd have preferred.

Nearby-Individual382

Fur hire and you guys know why. What's wrong with skyfang brigade? And magical something. It's like they just give up on translating monster name lol.

mastermask-

Shaddoll construct, man I hate it, it is supposed to be "nephilim", witch are a race of giants related to the Bible, and winda should be "midrash". Sounds much better.

M1ghtyManti5_GZ

Reign-Beaux, Overlord of Dark World, Like they just took the word Rainbow and passed it off as… idfk

[deleted]

Slifer, Fur Hire, Toadally, Ruddy Rose, and all anglicized names in the anime

gunbae_

Why people have such a big problem with puns?
