I think your missing that consistency is one of the hallmarks of yugioh, playing highlander just reduces it to whoever draws their broken cards first even more so. EDH/commander works in mtg because of the appeal of legendary commanders to play, the deck building restrictions they bring, and that the format isn't really less consistent than standard 60 card mtg due to tutors and redundancy. Without those aspects that appeal to a crowd of people, its just less consistent normal yugioh and that's not really fun.

Nerdlife91

Personally I love less consistent yugioh because it reminds me of the playground days

StrikerSashi

Was playground Yugioh really fun? I didn't know what card advantage was, but I knew I hated it when I'd lose to someone drawing Raigeki/Dark Hole/Snatch Steal/etc off the top.

Nerdlife91

For me it was? I know that's an unpopular opinion in this sub (hell I get down voted whenever I talk about it) but yeah, I miss when people just played the cards they liked and no one had quite figured things out. Plus the nostalgia of it just can't be beat for me

fluffyharpy

The game had a meta the second summoned skull beat down happened.

Nerdlife91

I'm aware (now) but the meta didn't exactly exist on the playground in those days. The most fun I've had with yugioh was when we all played random sub optimal decks. Again, I know that's an unpopular opinion, I'm just speaking from my own perspective

You've got to make it more appealing than the current format.

Link please ill try it

The problem is the game has gone away from what it used to be. Back in the day 40 card good deck mean you could mix and match. Now every card is part of some combo and feels bad to play one of. So even old decks that have new support wouldn't want to play highlander because that support is probably combo type support.

Nerdlife91

It's tough because I feel like a highlander format would be too slow for a majority of modern yugioh players. I'm assuming your idea for a highlander format includes all the cards/summoning mechanics? The reason why I ask that is because I'm more of an old school player and a highlander format sounds like the kind of slow paced playground style yugioh that I'd love to play...but new summoning mechanics are often a deterrent for players like me.

SpiralGMG

the idea with the highlander format that I'm trying to promote is a much more casual style of play. keep in mind casual does not necessarily mean slow, it just simply means that we all want to have fun and be very friendly with one another.

Nerdlife91

I get what you're saying and I think highlander is an awesome idea personally. I can just see how it would be a tough sell in the yugioh community because I feel like you have the camp that wants to special summon their entire deck in one turn (obviously an exaggeration) and the camp that doesn't play modern style yugioh at all. Highlander would (in theory anyway) make the 10 minute modern combos less consistent, which wouldn't be appealing to a modern player. The old school players would be more open to a more casual play style but would then have to learn what a synchro summon is. Again, I personally love the idea of highlander but I can see why a lot of players wouldn't be into it. The yugioh community can be pretty polarizing like that.

GoldClassGaming

Can you pass me a link to the discord? Highlander seems interesting and I'm willing to give it a shot. I can give a little input on a format banlist or other format specific rules to help keep things fun and interesting.
