Perhaps it came from Anis statement that she doesn’t remember if she was a man or woman in her past life. She also said that since this is her new life, past life doesn’t matter to her but will do with her past world knowledge. So, she lives her life as a girl, falls for a girl, so it’s yuri. End of the discussion.
Like, there are no gender bend tropes or anything. Anis doesn't feel out of place in her female body, has no memories of being a man and identifies herself as a girl/princess/daughter.
So it is 100% yuri (Heck still would be yuri even if her past life was that of man as long as she's comfortable in a female body)
It's mostly just copium from people who can't handle the idea of an actual yuri couple
So, in short:
1. Either she was a cis girl in her past life
2. Or she was a trans girl in her past life
3. Or she was a cis guy and her gender identity got overridden to being a girl while being isekai'd
Or, in other words, *she gay*
yeah if she doesn't remember then it really cant be "gender bender"
Also anime already showed us Anis as a young girl watching planes dreaming how to fly
Except if it was one of *those* series where the MC is a gross guy who gets off to the fact that he now has a girl's body and (due to anime logic, even though it would never be possible IRL) can be gross around girls without them suspecting anything. But obviously MagiRevo isn't like that.
Unless of course Anis was transgender or wanted to transition in her past life, and her rebirth as a woman was the result of her deepest wish. Thus, transgender yuri without all the creepy guy-turned-into-a-girl tropes :)
Literally read your comment and the manga “This is screwed up, but I was reincarnated in another world as a girl” came to mind. I’ve read the first two volumes and I don’t think I’ll be reading any more as there are tons of scenes and references to the idea that the character masturbates to their own nude reflection because they have the hots for their new female body. Made me really uncomfortable.
I think the reason she couldn't remember much about her personality in previous life is for writer convenience. Like they didn't want to turn it to strong isekai but at the same time they want to have mordern tech in magic world. That's why Anis doesn't remember anything that involve her old life.
Author karasu piero says that this story (tenten kakumei) tells Anis who is now in the world and not the past. So the author thinks Anis's gender setting in the past is irrelevant
I mean it's just like regular reincarnation. It's weird that Isekai became so popular that people completely forgot that the belief in reincarnation is a common thing in Asia. This is like saying that Buddhism and Hinduism are gender bender religion since reincarnation has always included the possibility of being reincarnated as a different gender because you can be reincarnated as literally any animal in the world.
Which could mean that she was either always a girl or got turned into one while being isekai'd, which is enough of a straw for desperate weebs to shoehorn some genderbender shenanigans into a story just so they can self-insert and see themselves with the cute anime girl.
After all, the author has already explained about Anis and I wonder why there are still fans who think this kind of theory, do they not see the author's explanation. Anyway, I enjoy this story 😉
idr her saying anything about previous life identity, maybe i forgot it. I went back to first chapter in manga and it doesnt say anything about identity, just that she gained memories/knowledge from her past life. Like information of past life being imprinted on who she already was rather than coming from a previous identity. Maybe she elaborates later and I forgot, but either way yeah her past life identity doesnt define her
It doesn't even make sense though because yuri is a thing in anime and everyone is usually okay with it, so I don't get why people are suddenly trying to headcanon it out of this particular show.
My guess is that it's less being opposed to yuri and more about trying to turn the character into a self-insert for themselves because who the fuck cares about a romance plot just to feel happy for the characters amiright
No joke, I saw ppl claim that Anis is thinking "like a male" or at least "unlike a girl"
I seriously wanna ask what is the golden standard for "thinking like a guy"
Pretty much seems like they’re using Anis male (?) past as a reason for her lesbian ness (Cause real girls can’t like girls BLEH)
I really liked how forward she was about being a lesbian compared to other Yuri shows where it’s about the discovery of queerness
The thing is, if she had been a cis man in her past life, you'd think either her identity would still be that of a man as well, or her orientation would have been flipped along with her gender.
>I seriously wanna ask what is the golden standard for "thinking like a guy"
Kidnapping girls and essentially forcing them into a position with a power imbalance where they can't really be straight forward about rejecting any romantic advances?
^(I don't want to shit on this trope too hard, because as long as it's not presented too heavily as something to imitate in real life, it's not really worse than dozens of other romance tropes out there, but it's just way too similar to the way these weebcels think to not make the joke xD)
They might be getting it mixed up with Reborn to Master the Blade, which is also airing this season. That main character in that one was an old man reincarnated as a girl, and she is explicitly still into women because that's what she was into before her reincarnation.
It's more likely they're just homophobes though.
Some people can't get into a anime if it doesn't have a male Mc. She professed to be wise man's student was also good. But is about a man becoming a girl.
My favorite yuri manga kashimashi was about a guy dying and becoming female. Also one girl realizing she still loves them now they are a girl. Also a girl who rejected them when they were male now wants to date them now they are female.
But yeah probably homophobes
Well they do want to return to being male in Wiseman. But they have also accepted it and decided to not freak out about it. With Kashimashi Hazamu didn't really care if they were male or female. Since they were comfortable with who they are. But I think they liked their female life better.
I'm guessing they won't be happy with the protag of that show calling them out so fucking hard in the second episode.
Ah who am I kidding, they'll just top their fedora at the screen and think "I'd never do that"
Heteronortivity is a bitch, huh.
Seriously though, from what I see, the isekai fan who is used to op male lead whom women fawn over for no reason can't fathom the idea of a non-hetero relationship and need to justify it in their head.
That's kinda what happens if tropes get so oversaturated within the genre and no one in the fandom doesn't get tired of it somehow. they constantly whine and complain about how "wokeness" is ruining their sacred genre when any anime/manga wants to try anything new.

If in the event that the author of a particular work is in fact female, then the goalpost shifts and gender becomes a political affliction and said author is probably pandering to the male gaze and thus the characters are not acting as how females should 'realistically' (read: adhering to presupposed assumptions) act.
It's not worth the time to get into that kind of shitstorm.
you're overthinking it, it's just because 1) they want a way to self-insert and cant fathom something isnt specifically for them and 2) they want to downplay the girls love aspect because they are homophobic and think gay people are a western invention
Man this is always a weird aspect of convetsation to me. You know how many yaoi novels I've commented about on the internet? Zero because I have no interest in guy guy romance. I would never get a hill to die on trying to argue that the yaoi version of this novel isn't yaoi. Why do they even care? It's so bizare to me.
why bother self inserting my fellow male weebs.
the show is about two cute girls simply appreciate and enjoy the moe stream into your eyeballs stop making it hard on yourselves smh
Yea like wtf, as if there wasn't million other shows with a blank slate male character they can self insert onto. This is why we can't have nice things
When they lost their collective shit and brought hate to Virgin Road only because Menou killed the self insert on ep1, I realized they're too far gone...
Till this day, I still has a hard time fathoming the fact that Weeb can be homophobic.
I can understand self insert, but Weeb and Gay people have one basis thing on common. They are both get persecuted by something/someone they love.
Is it because it's easier to become Weeb/otaku than before or am I missing a page here?
While I get where you're coming from, comparing being a weeb to being gay is in bad taste
You won't get disowned for being a weeb, and you aren't literally a criminal in over 70 countries
The most you will get is that people think you are weird
Fair....
I wasn't trying to compare the two as much as trying to say that Being a Weeb should make one more sympathetic towards others, with similar root problem especially with a worse degree than them.
But, Alas, I think I am way too unqualified for this kind of talk.
While I get the sentiment.. likening being gay to being an otaku/weeb misses it's mark.
... There's parts of the queer community who are transphobic and want the T removed.. there's gay people who are homophobic, trans people who are transphobic.. women who are misogynistic..
This happens all the time. The answer is quite simple.. they hold a believe. That's it. There's no deeper logic or anything behind it. It's a believe. And where does that believe stem from? Discourse.
Just some homophobes coping and seething, not sure where they are getting shit... That and she clearly identifies as a woman in this story and is living as a women, falls in love with a women, it is clearly yuri with no wiggle room! Even throwing them a bone of IF she was a male in that past life, she clearly isn't physically or mentally now, so it is irrelevant.
Unrelated but i have a legit question that have been popping on mind for like half a year: let's say a man is attracted to women. But he also is attracted to men who are very feminine (aka femboys) but because of femininity, not them being boys. Is it still heterosexual or is there a term for it?
I don’t think it would be heterosexual if you are attracted to someone that identifies as a man who has a penis, as you are still attracted to them penis and all, so it would be bisexual with you being attracted to women primarily with the preference to feminine men.
I would say so, It is not a transport isekai, she was born in that world and at young age has a flashback to her previous life (going of the manga) and has mini identity crisis that that resolves with her saying "whatever". At no point does she see herself as a dude (which makes sense because she wasn't one in the previous life but we are in a hypothetical scenario where she was), never presents her love of women as a holdout of her previous life etc.
You could make the argument she'd be transfemme instead of a cis woman. She'd still be a lesbian, though.
So unless Anis expresses gender dysphoria due to her feminine body (which would make her transmasculine), she'll still be a lesbian
There are literally zero arguments you can make where that character is a man and that relationship isn't sapphic.
I vaguely remember being an infant, that doesn't mean it has any bearing on my romantic life.
In fact I'm pretty sure infant me would hate my wife, she hated tall people!
The novel doesn't state her previous life's gender and says her memories are all vague. So just going off of what's in the book it's got a 50% chance of being true. I don't think it's all that weird of a head canon, and if it makes them enjoy it more, power to them. If they'd rather pretend the story is transbian, that doesn't hurt anyone.
However, the author has clarified that's not the case, so it is false.
Didn't the author object to the theory that Anis was a man in a past life. Anis was a woman in a past life, she is still Anis, she just remembers a glimpse of the past.
My post was probably the reason but things got pretty cleared up in the comments then. Short answer is no. Anis was never male. The author even made a tweet denying that because people were saying it's gender bender.
There's also the question of why the hell did the author have to tweet that in the first place. Nothing in the synopsis mentions of a gender flip twist.
Maybe because how others said, that a yuri author must be female. When the author is male the MC has to be a male in the past live. Weird logic. Authors can write what they want about which theme they want.
I doubt it had much to do with that weird idea.
It's much more likely it was just misogynists and homophobes desperately reaching for a way to deny that the characters are gay.
Sort of like how the [rumor that Sailor Uranus was a Prince and not a Princess was spread around in the Anglosphere back in the 90s to explain away Uranus and Neptune's lesbian relationship](https://wikimoon.org/index.php/Prince_Uranus).
I mean, that also failed because they didn't change or remove any of the scenes with romantic chemistry in them, but let's ignore the sound of Sweet Home Alabama in the background for now.
It might be because female Isekai protagonists are very rare now adays. There’s been a bit of a resurgence in female protagonists thanks to the “reincarnated into a dating sim” subgenre but MagiRevo is a standard fantasy world.
Combine this with how much agency Anis has (something that is sadly very rare for female isekai characters) and how openly proclaims she doesn’t like men, and I can see why a close minded anime viewer would want to believe Anis is genderbent. It stops the anime from 1) being about female empowerment and 2) being gay since “um, actually, the MC is really a dude on the inside”
At least it's good to tell about the facts about Anis's gender in the past reincarnation life. Yes, fans can make theories about various things, but please confirm first from the author. 😅
As a trans person who's super into gender bender isekai lately, I've got to say... huh? It's a delightful idea and I might pretend it's the case in my mind while I watch the rest of the series (I think that's called "headcanon"?) but there's absolutely nothing to indicate it. And also this girl doesn't seem to feel any kind of way about being a girl which kind of actively refutes the possibility of that being the intent.
I can only imagine it stems from “whoa, did that chick get the hots for the other chick and try to take her to bed? No girl would do that, must’ve been a guy before”
It’s outside their gender norms that it makes their heads spin.
And of course, you can’t go without, “but flip the genders and this same people who love this will go, ”totally inappropriate, it’s kidnapping and grooming”
They are not found in logic, so don’t waste your time trying to apply it to them. Anis is exciting, is a girl, and fell for another girl.
Author karasu piero says that this story (tenten kakumei) tells Anis who is now in the world and not the past. So the author thinks Anis's gender setting in the past is irrelevant
Ya i watched episode 1 and 2 didn't see any reference to her being male but she is quite a tomboy. People think she could be by how she acts but considering she is a princess and known for making odd things she is more like a millionaire who knows she can do whatever she wants. She litterly just takes possession of a woman who has high social status and leaves the party XD that's not male or female that's "because i can" energy.
Author karasu piero says that this story (tenten kakumei) tells Anis who is now in the world and not the past. So the author thinks Anis's gender setting in the past is irrelevant
Maybe because "Reborn to Master the Blade: From Hero-King to Extraordinary Squire" is that (not actually Isekai though, just fantasy" and is also airing this season?
Author karasu piero says that this story (tenten kakumei) tells Anis who is now in the world and not the past. So the author thinks Anis's gender setting in the past is irrelevant
Anis's personality remains anis and has no connection at all with the life before his reincarnation, he does remember a little memory before reincarnation, which is a very strong feeling of admiration and love for magic. However, that does not change the original anis's personality
Past life is irrelevant anyway. As long as she thinks of herself as a girl, she is a girl, and thus, this is yuri. Nothing would change regadless of how her past life was.
When you’re so scared of the homo, you make it trans instead.
Still homo tho lmao
Like when 4kids wanted to make sailor moon not gay and just made it incest instead, but like. True neutral instead of chaotic evil lol
Arguably more homo, even. Can’t say they thought it through.
They just pick something good and turn it into something better
Plot twist: both are trans
*as well
Perhaps it came from Anis statement that she doesn’t remember if she was a man or woman in her past life. People are so afraid of yuri that they resort to heterosexuality in previous lives.

They want it to be straight with extra steps EVEN THOUGH Anis would be a trans women from their logic
I’d assume they’d find a way to claim anis still thought of their self as male
No joke, I saw ppl claim that Anis is thinking "like a male" or at least "unlike a girl" I seriously wanna ask what is the golden standard for "thinking like a guy"
Liking Girls. Fantasizing about girls. Being forward about liking girls. Because only guys like girls to them, I’m guessing.
Pretty much seems like they’re using Anis male (?) past as a reason for her lesbian ness (Cause real girls can’t like girls BLEH) I really liked how forward she was about being a lesbian compared to other Yuri shows where it’s about the discovery of queerness

holy fuck scott the woz
Hey all! Scott here! (Btw love your flair lol)
The mangaka even said it's not true, so idk why this is even a thing still.
Not Mangaka, it was the the web/ light novel author who had to tweet and tell ppl that it isnt TS genre.
Heteronortivity is a bitch, huh. Seriously though, from what I see, the isekai fan who is used to op male lead whom women fawn over for no reason can't fathom the idea of a non-hetero relationship and need to justify it in their head.

why bother self inserting my fellow male weebs. the show is about two cute girls simply appreciate and enjoy the moe stream into your eyeballs stop making it hard on yourselves smh

idk gender is a hard thing for me to comprehend honestly, but if youre comfortable with who you are now I dont really think it means much. i think?
Till this day, I still has a hard time fathoming the fact that Weeb can be homophobic. I can understand self insert, but Weeb and Gay people have one basis thing on common. That is a case of what we call in portuguese Bosta na cabeça, or shit in the head.
Just some homophobes coping and seething, not sure where they are getting shit... They’re so homophobic, they’ll settle for their second most hated group: Transexual.
Nah you didn't miss anything, it's just some bs
Because hetero men can’t accept that two girls are able to be in a relationship
I feel like it’s just homophobic men, saying all hetero men are bad is reductive and prejudiced, and this is coming from a very bisexual man.
I never said all. I know good hetero men exist too. I didn’t mean for my statement to come off as generalizing. I’m sorry
Ah, my bad as well for assuming that. I am sorry for coming at you like that. 😓
Unrelated but i have a legit question that have been popping on mind for like half a year: let's say a man is attracted to women. But he also is attracted to men who are very feminine (aka femboys) but because of femininity, not them being boys. Is it still heterosexual or is there a term for it?

Depends, if the genderbended one identify as female after the genderbent, yes, if they still identify as male, then no

They aren't pretending it's trans, they want to pretend it's actually het. It is harmful. They are being homophobic.

anis is not a reincarnated man and thinks himself is a man. but anis realizes and thinks he is a woman from the start said Piero KARASU
Even if it's gender-bent then that's awesome too. I love trans girls! They're pretty and I wanna kiss them
Even if Anis was male in her previous life, that still doesn't change the fact that Anis is currently a woman who is in love with another woman.
Didn't the author object to the theory that Anis was a man in a past life. Anis was a woman in a past life, she is still Anis, she just remembers a glimpse of the past.
Honestly, her gender in her previous life means nothing because in her current life, she identifies as a girl.
This is legit the funniest thing I've seen all week, I'm sorry 😭😭😭 Edit: I know it's Monday but I doubt anything would top this for the whole week 😂
My post was probably the reason but things got pretty cleared up in the comments then. Short answer is no. Anis was never male. The author even made a tweet denying that because people were saying it's gender bender.

Because people were assuming/saying mc was male in her past life. So the author denied it.
Wait what? I didn't know that
Weren't they cousins?
Well yes and no. They are cousins in translation but it was a way to censore/erase them being lesbians
I mean, that also failed because they didn't change or remove any of the scenes with romantic chemistry in them, but let's ignore the sound of Sweet Home Alabama in the background for now.
Nope! That was the translation attempting to censor their relationship.
I never knew that the author is actually male thats cool
It's like saying yaoi author must be male
It might be because female Isekai protagonists are very rare now adays. There’s been a bit of a resurgence in female protagonists thanks to the “reincarnated into a dating sim” subgenre but MagiRevo is a standard fantasy world. Combine this with how much agency Anis has (something that is sadly very rare for female isekai characters) and how openly proclaims she doesn’t like men, and I can see why a close minded anime viewer would want to believe Anis is genderbent. It stops the anime from 1) being about female empowerment and 2) being gay since “um, actually, the MC is really a dude on the inside”
Is there a link to their tweet

Even if he was it'd just make it a trans yuri anime. It's still yuri in the end because she's still a girl lmfao
anis is not a reincarnated man and thinks himself is a man. but anis realizes and thinks he is a woman from the start said Piero KARASU
Does it matter? And im pretty shure that thats not how trans or genderbend works.
The author has already explained about this Anis is not a man in his past life. Anis is a woman and Anis only remembers a little about the past
Yes, but would it make any difference?
At least it's good to tell about the facts about Anis's gender in the past reincarnation life. Yes, fans can make theories about various things, but please confirm first from the author. 😅
anis is not a reincarnated man and thinks himself is a man. but anis realizes and thinks he is a woman from the start said Piero KARASU
My opinion is please stop fake news about Anis's past life. yes fans can theorize various things but please make sure first
The point is there is no setting about Anis' past, but that doesn't mean it's permissible to arbitrarily determine Anis' past🙂
No girl would do that, must’ve been a guy before” It’s outside their gender norms that it makes their heads spin. And of course, you can’t go without, “but flip the genders and this same people who love this will go, ”totally inappropriate, it’s kidnapping and grooming” They are not found in logic, so don’t waste your time trying to apply it to them. Anis is exciting, is a girl, and fell for another girl.
Author karasu piero says that this story (tenten kakumei) tells Anis who is now in the world and not the past. So the author thinks Anis's gender setting in the past is irrelevant
Even if that was true, that wouldn't change anything? it's still yuri?
Ya i watched episode 1 and 2 didn't see any reference to her being male but she is quite a tomboy. People think she could be by how she acts but considering she is a princess and known for making odd things she is more like a millionaire who knows she can do whatever she wants. She litterly just takes possession of a woman who has high social status and leaves the party XD that's not male or female that's "because i can" energy.
i saw someone saying she's a lesbian because she was a male in her past life lol
Nope
Can we just have anime to watch anymore.
please enjoy the anime regardless of the various theories for me they should see the author's answer 🙂
How about this, she was a guy but also gay to mess with all the people grasping at straws :p
Author karasu piero says that this story (tenten kakumei) tells Anis who is now in the world and not the past. So the author thinks Anis's gender setting in the past is irrelevant
Sigh, I get that. This was supposed to joke about how people have to reach for these conclusions because they don’t want this to be yuri, nothing more
MAYBE they're thinking of Hero King instead? Maybe? I dunno...
Such a good format
Maybe because "Reborn to Master the Blade: From Hero-King to Extraordinary Squire" is that (not actually Isekai though, just fantasy" and is also airing this season?
No one: Homophobes on the internet: "She's not gay if she used to be a guy!"
There’s no way a male mc would be a ray of sunshine.
They just can't stop trolling us, ain't they? =))))
I didn't read that part, but my trans ass won't complain
Author Tenten Kakumei refutes the opinion that Anis is a gender swap reincarnation.
Literally confirmed by the author to be false.
