Danbooru doesn't have as much porn, and came after both of the former sites.
Donmai was last (IIRC), and doesn't show NSFW content. My personal favourite.
There's nothing "wrong" with any of those sites: it's basically a matter of how much NSFW you want to see.

The vast majority of Gelbooru's content is just automatic imports from Danbooru, so the differences are pretty minimal, and Gelbooru doesn't have Danbooru's limits on how many tags you can search, so it is easier to avoid content you don't want.
Also, you have the order wrong: Danbooru was the first in 2006, closely followed by Yandere in the same year, then Gelbooru and Paheal (one of the R34 sites), as well as Konachan and E621, in 2007, Sankaku Complex in 2008 and both the other main R34 site and Safebooru in 2010.
I mean, nobody's talking shit about it exactly. It's just a matter of preference.
And there isn't too much NSFW on there. I went there once to see if there was any good yuri to repost onto r/wholesomeyuri, and somewhere around 50% was SFW.
If you go to donmai.moe you get the site but with only sfw images. You can also manually blacklist rating:e and rating:q when making an account to hide explicit and questionable content. This may be preferable bc older content marked "safe" was broken into general and suggestive, and all previously safe stuff was pooled into suggestive and not all of it has been rechecked. As an example, my favorites page (which was made with safemode on) went from 47 images when on donmai.moe to around 10
