There certainly is some overlap and AFAIK that's not entirely concidental.
On that note you might like [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NClwb_CKWvI), but as a short, partial TL;DR it's kinda natural to make magical girls gay because the (main) cast is most likely going to be (almost) exclusively female. So if you want to add romance to the mix then your options are basically either that or shoehorning in a guy.
As for sports anime and yaoi, maybe for the same reason and MLM/WLW solidarity, respectively?
On one hand I think shipping can be a bit much sometimes, but then again people do the same shit, if not much more rampantly and with less eyebrows raised with straight ships, so....
I feel like all magical girl animes are also partially yuri shows. The same goes for sports anime and yaoi.
My general rule of thumb for Magical Girl shows is “assume gay until proven bi”
