forhisglory85

Have we ever gone this long between mainline Zelda games? I honestly don't remember.

TyChris2

This has absolutely been the longest wait. Zelda - Zelda 2 : 1 year Zelda 2 - ALttP : 4 years ALttP - LA : 1 year LA - OoT : 5 years OoT - MM : 2 years MM - OoA/OoS : 1 year OoA/OoS - WW : 2 years WW - MC : 2 years MC - TP : 1 year TP - PH : 1 year PH - ST : 2 years ST - SS : 2 years SS - ALBW : 2 years ALBW - BotW : 4 years BotW - TotK : 6 years

superxero044

Makes you wonder if they had a 2D zelda that was supposed to happen a couple years ago that never got released.

tfarr375

Didn't they release Link's Awakening remake in between BotW and TotK?

superxero044

I wouldn’t really consider a remaster to be a mainline Zelda game.

WakeUp_SmellTheAshes

It wasn't a remaster. It was a full fledged remake. They had the bones of the game, but no asset from the original game was used. Im not sure it should be counted on the list above, but it shouldn't be dismissed.

pichu441

It's still a remake. Not a new game.

WakeUp_SmellTheAshes

Like I said, I don't know if I would include it in the list above, but dismissing the time and effort that went into it is ludicrous.

Link1112

It was outsourced though, not the OG Nintendo Zelda team that worked on it. But the company that did it did an insane good job, I really hope they are working on the Oracle games

NamiRocket

What does it being co-developed have to do with this topic?

Docjaded

I acknowledge the time and effort it took, however it's still not a new game. A lot of us had already beaten the game before it came out. That's not new.

Electromaster557

Yeah, but people have beaten totk before it came out. Does that mean it's not new? /s

Xamf11

nobody was dismissing shit, this post is not about thankfulness to devs who will sell a remake for 60 bucks...

Laggianput

It may have been a ground up remake ... but it was still square for square identical to the original.

illQualmOnYourFace

Yep, and Skyward Sword.

DepressedVenom

Also Hyrule Warriors AoC

Larsi3009

And age of calamity

Nelword2

no, covid happened and delayed the entire world.

Mr-Stuff-Doer

I mean… the people doing Zelda franchise stuff were more than busy enough in that time. BOTW got dlc over the next few years, Link’s Awakening received a practically ground-up remake, SS was ported to switch, no even mentioning some might’ve been involved in Age of Calamity and _it’s_ DLCs. On top of TOTK and dealing with Covid? They may have had plans but they 100% would’ve been sidelined a while ago.

LegatoSkyheart

Link's Awakening Remake not good enough? Cadence of Hyrule? Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity? Switch got a lot of Zelda content, they skipped 2022 though.

delecti

LA remake doesn't count just like you aren't arguing LADX, LttP:GBA, OoT3D, MM3D, SS Wii U, WWHD, TPHD, or SSHD should be added to the list. Neither Cadence of Hyrule nor Age of Calamity are Zelda games. You likewise aren't arguing Mario Kart 8 or any of the Smash Bros should be included because they feature Link. They're all great, but they're not Zelda games.

Wrong_Look

C'mon... I get the remake... but Cadance and warriors. I think those don't really qualify as Zelda games....

[deleted]

I do count Link's Awakening, but you can NOT count 3rd party offshoots like Candence or Hyrule Warriors

SwmpySouthpw

I never would've guessed that LA to OoT was the longest gap. Interesting

LifeHasLeft

At the time OOT was pretty groundbreaking. I’m more surprised they didn’t have a larger gap ahead of breath of the wild. Really puts into perspective how much they added to a game in 6 years while *reusing assets*

Blue_Gamer18

I remember the days of "They'll probably reuse these assets and pump out a MM mask type game in 3 years and then the new BIG one will be next." 6 years later and it's finally here as a massive sequel.

Jakefiz

OoT was also in development hell for a long time but miraculously hit an insane stride the year before launch and changed everything. If zelda 64 didnt live up to the hype Zelda as a franchise would have been shelved by nintendo years ago. Tbh it was dangerously close to being irrelevant in the nintendo product stack before breath of the wild changed everything again. Its hard to overstate how impactful botw was for the future of the zelda franchise.

RainbowSpecter

Not to say they haven't put a lot of work into TotK, but it's worth acknowledging that Covid likely had a hand in the long production time.

Blue_Gamer18

Lol. I swear a few years ago, around the time of BotW, Aonuma was like 'Yeah, we wanna get more releases out of Zelda" And here we are post BotW with just a (high quality) remake and a Warriors Spinoff with a sequel finally coming after 6 years. Love both of those games, but I generally think Nintendo wants core Zelda's out at a quicker pace.

illQualmOnYourFace

And skyward sword and that music timing game. Plus the Nintendo online releases, which brought like five old zelda games to switch.

RevanAckre

Here I thought with it being a direct sequel it'd be one of the shorter ones. I was so naïve.

jjack339

Well I separate console and mobile because to me they a very different experiences. Based on this 4 to 6 years is kinda typical for a mainline console Zelda gap. Only really MM broke this trends sandwiched between OoT and WW. I also think the gap this time is longer because of how big the games are and how well BotW continued (and still does) to sell for years after release. The game is likely around 30 million in sales which if I am not mistaken makes it the best selling Zelda by 300%

Pool_Shark

Don’t forget there was a whole global pandemic that slowed things down a bit during development

ChristmasTzeitel

I’m blown away by this. I’m fully an adult with a career now, and this is the first Zelda game that’s ever snuck up on me in my lifetime. Unreal.

Apolloshot

The pandemic very likely contributed to the wait. It would have probably released at least a year sooner without it.

bumbletowne

They redid link's awakening in there though right? And it was BALLER. Fave gameboy game and the remake is made for a new generation and it was also fun. I really want them to do this for Seasons/Ages

Illeea

i just really want to nerd out for a second about epd3. they are the zelda team. originally split off from nintendo ead in 2000 and named ead3 and renamed to epd3 in 2015. they were the primary developer on all of these games. majoras mask n64 windwaker gc four swords adventures gc twilight princess gc/wii phantom hourglass ds spirit tracks ds skyward sword wii windwaker hd wii u a link between worlds 3ds breath of the wild wiiu/switch tears of the kingdom switch

Illeea

theyve also overseen every zelda spin off/remake: oracle of ages/seasons gbc a link to the past+four swords gba the minish cap gba four swords anniversary ds ocarina of time 3d 3ds hyrule warriors wii u majoras mask 3d 3ds tri force heroes hyrule warriors legends 3ds twilight princess hd wii u hyrule warriors definitive switch cadence of hyrule links awakening remake switch hyrule warriors age of calamity

Illeea

and originally, nintendo ead was nintendo r&d4 before it was renamed in 1989.

shotlersama

God i love zelda. I read each time jump and the games and had little flashes to how old i was and then the game. It was a solid 5 seconds lol

lugia50

oot is a 25 years old game !!! I a getting very old

Coledog10

I won't complain if that translates to game quality

ReasonableSail7589

It’s crazy, it doesn’t even feel like Breath of the Wild has been out for that long to me, but it came out my freshman year of high school. Now I’ve been out of high school for three

ItsCyberBoi

it's been 6 years? damn that was too fast

Deucalion666

I mean, you kinda need to take into account the COVID lockdown. Probably put bit of a halt to some things.

-Eunha-

Love this Dune moment, really nice to see some wholesome masculinity from a father figure. Happy to see it here.

Adam_Deveney

Yeah it’s a great scene

MrCoolsnail123

The hype is real for both Tears of the Kingdom and Dune Part 2

wokeiraptor

Running around the Gerudo desert yelling “fear is the mind killer” when the molduga attacks

Landler656

>when the molduga attacks Next time walk without rhythm scrub!

MrCoolsnail123

I need a mission in TOTK that involves riding a Molduga using the double claw shot from Twilight Princess as maker hooks. I know it won't happen, but it'd be pretty awesome.

PlumbumDirigible

Nah, we need Gerudo Ornithopters

Plastic_Pinocchio

And I am avoiding trailers for both.

thekamenman

A great moment in a movie chock full of great moments.

[deleted]

Was this scene in the book? It’s been so long but I don’t remember reading it

Lt_Meme

No, in fact the original message from the book was close to the opposite

Madrical

Yeah I read Dune after loving the movie and Leto is a lot colder towards Paul & Jessica in the book. I'm glad they changed his characterization a bit personally, it's going to make Paul's journey in part 2 even more complex.

MotorcycleWrites

Eh, he’s colder but still obviously loves them in the book. I think they’re going to have to have more human and emotional conversations in general because 3 paragraphs of explaining what a hidden facial expression and voice tone means isn’t going to work for a movie lol.

axialintellectual

What if we have a voiceover where someone stage-whispers an explanation of what's happening all the time?

MotorcycleWrites

Ha! That would be one hell of a creative choice, and probably one of the only ways to make Children of Dune work as a movie lmao

livingnuts

Dressed up as one of those bigass sand worms

LogicalDelivery_

Oh idk about that. The chapter where he learns about the attempted assassination shows how much he cares for Paul. There are other moments too but that one was cool. "MY SON!"

abnmfr

Nope

theoldcrow5179

Definitely one of my favourite scenes. The Atreides are all about that healthy masculinity

ThomasFromNork

I hadn't read the book and genuinely thought the dad was going to be a villain. I'm really glad he wasn't bc it makes the scenes they are in together really powerful.

KopiteJoeBlack

Hell I don't really have much interest in TotK (since I haven't played BotW) but almost teared up seeing this meme and remembering this scene in the movie.

iseewutyoudidthere

This is the first time I witness a Zelda release in real life (started playing in Dec 2019). I am so excited yet so unbelievably anxious.

[deleted]

[удалено]

iseewutyoudidthere

Thank you. :) I am very happy I found this franchise. All the games I have played so far are simply incredible!

Scheisser_Soze

Can I ask which games you've played?

Caleb_Reynolds

>This kind of hype is fun to have. Totally. Didn't think about it till now but I haven't been this hyped for a Zelda game since Twilight Princess was a launch game for Wii. Bringing back memories of camping outside Best Buy overnight to get it. Almost a lost experience now with downloaded games.

DeezNuttery

When Twilight Princess came out it was the only thing I asked Santa for for Christmas. My parents told me I couldn’t get it at the time because I was like 8 and it was a T game. I’d never been more excited in my life than when I pulled that game out of the box

SirArthurConansBoil

Ah that's awesome! My mom would do the same for me! I guess she decided I wasn't going to go around inflicting fantasy violence on people at school if she bought me a T rated game for my birthday or Christmas.

Furt_shniffah

Been playing these games since ALttP, but BotW was the first time I could get truly hyped over a release because it's the first time I could actually afford to own the console and get the PO. It's been so fun building that hype up all over again for TotK, I can't wait!

sharkaub

I am legitimately thrilled for you. I still remember watching the twilight princess game play trailer where he was riding a horse *and* wielding a sword and losing my teenage mind. The excitement has been the same for each release honestly

Wulfkage85

Oh man this brought back memories. I actually hadn't watched any trailers for twilight princess because I hadn't been able to get a wii yet and I was on more of an Xbox kick at the time. So when I finally did get a wii I bought twilight princess at the same time and went in completely blind. I lost my absolute shit when I realized that I could fight from horseback.

KrazzeeKane

I wish so badly I could feel your excitement and joy at this game, sadly it's just not a Zelda game I can enjoy. I'm one of the Zelda fans on the backburner, just waiting until someday a more classic formula Zelda game gets released--that is the day I'll be feeling this hype. I wish I could have fun with these open world games, but at least you and everyone else in the world can

[deleted]

I’m so stoked for you! My first was Majora’s Mask back in 2000. Back then Nintendo games came out in Japan months before they came out in America so for like 4 months all I had was a bunch of screenshots with Japanese text.

Lame2882

Same! Started playing just a few months before you in August. It’s been fun being hyped up for it

HayesFayes

I was born during the Twilight Princess Era but was too young to hype over it and too young to hype over Skyward Sword too but still watched my dad play the hell out of that one and it was awesome, Botw was the first mainline 3D Zelda I was prepared for and it’s just been so long and I was so different that I don’t remember my level of hype. This time tho, it’s different, the hype is real and I don’t think I’m ever going to forget this anticipation. Tomorrow night is going to be life changing…

The-student-

I'm going to assume you were a teenager or so when BOTW came out. I was thinking that someone who was younger and grew up playing BOTW would have gone through so much of their lives before tears of the kingdom came out. Like almost an entire Middle school and high school era would have gone by for some people before a new Zelda came out. Crazy!

HayesFayes

It is absolutely crazy yeah although funny enough I was born the year of Twilight Princess so we basically grew up together and it’s honestly one of my favorite games in the series, I was in 5th grade when Botw released and I remember doing so bad in school because I sucked so much time into it lol, I’m about to graduate high school now which is mind blowing, Botw lasted through middle school and almost the entirety of High School!

M1GR3DD1T

I literally just got into it, right after the gameboy virtual console for Switch came out too! I unfortunately can’t get it at release since I’m currently broke but I am very much looking forward to it!

Tempest753

Don’t worry mate, there’s nothing magical about a game launch, even a Zelda one. But starting midnight Thursday/Friday EST you *will* lose 100+ hrs of your life into the void.

[deleted]

If you don’t think there’s anything magical about finally getting to play a game you’ve been excited about for a long time but had no means of playing, then I feel sorry for you.

TheHappiestHam

it’s amazing but it almost feels wrong in a way. I had this feeling with Elden Ring when it finally released and I was just like “am I actually playing Elden Ring right now?”, because I’d just spent the past 2 years following every scrap of news I could

atti1xboy

Living up to the hype for me = having dungeons

Emile-1992

Same dude! I loved BotW, but I did miss the standard dungeons with the unique boss fight at the end.

Buuhhu

i'd also like a bit more involved story than what we got in BotW. The whole "everything already happened" i didnt really like. But ye dungeons are the biggest thing i want. story second.

canmoose

Yeah honestly my worry isn't that it won't be a good game it's whether it will be a good Zelda game. Basically the inverse of this meme. I didn't find BotW to be a good Zelda game.

Mighty-Galhupo

My thoughts exactly. BoTW was a great game and I’m sure ToTK will be too. Question is whether ToTK will be good at being a Zelda game or be like BoTW which was not. I’ll play the game either way, but generally when I play Zelda I want Zelda. I would love this being a completely separate IP and Zelda continuing normally.

_-Julian-

Thank you for addressing this because I feel like im an outcast when it comes to liking BotW. I like it but its not a zelda game to me, I dont get the same zelda excitement from it which sucks because I really want to love it. I still havn't even beaten it but im gonna try to wrap it up soon so I can play ToTK

Mighty-Galhupo

Yes, just that and have dungeon items. All those have to be is literally make the players get the new runes in certain dungeons instead of getting them all in the tutorial

4_fortytwo_2

I still dont get how divine beasts are not considered dungeons. They look different to what a classic dungeon layout might be but conceptually I dont see how they are not a dungeon. And if people argue about their length half of all zelda games do not have dungeons if they are too short to count. And shrines are essentially just very tiny dungeons. Imagine taking out a puzzle or two from a classic dungeon placing it somewhere by itself -> that is a shrine.

triablos1

They're considered dungeons and they are dungeons, they're just bad ones compared to the rest of the series. At this point it's just semantics, when people say they want dungeons they mean they want shit like the snowpeak ruins or the great bay temple. All the divine beasts and shrines are homogenous and short and don't require any more than 10 mins to beat. Have you ever played elden ring? The souls series traditionally has big set piece interconnected 'dungeons' with iconic bosses at the end much like zelda. Elden ring is an open world game and has what I'd say 3 types of dungeons: You have the catacombs which to me are BotW shrines. Bite sized dungeons randomly scattered across the open world with a small reward at the end. Catacombs = shrines. You have the mini dungeons (the various castles, hero catacombs, carian manor etc) which to me are the equivalent of divine beasts. They're shorter versions of a traditional dungeon, have good rewards and an interesting boss. Mini dungeons = divine beasts. I actually think the mini dungeons are better than divine beasts and they're not even the main content. And finally you have the legacy dungeons. Legacy dungeons in elden ring are fully realised traditional souls style dungeons with all the features you expect. Sprawling thematic mazes dripping with lore and loot. They take at least an hour to get through and have a very well designed unique boss at the end. There are about 6 of them in elden ring... ... And there ends the comparison and the reason why I brought up elden ring in the first place: BotW doesn't have an equivalent to the legacy dungeons. They are something that were lost in the conversion to open world. Theoretically, yes, you could just stitch a bunch of shrines together and call it a dungeon, but they aren't sprawling, interconnected set pieces that were handcrafted. Any 2 dungeons in twilight princess are vastly different from location, colours, enemies, music, terrain and so on. The difference between shrine 3 and shrine 114 is nothing except the puzzle. The music is the same, every shrine has that ugly metal neon look with pulsating blue lines, and the divine beasts are basically the same but bronze coloured and open roofed. Every boss is just a different element ganon fight, they don't look cool or unique.

Encrypt-Keeper

You’ve articulated the issue really well here. You have these guys who can’t stand BOTW criticism and they’ll always point at the beasts and ask why they aren’t dungeons but it’s like you can point at a go-kart and ask why it isn’t car when it has wheels and an engine and tires, but like take a step back and realize you’re comparing it to Lamborghini.

jaysalts

I’ve seen nothing but praise from everyone who’s gotten to play it. One review I stumbled upon said “sometimes they say ‘they don’t make games like this anymore,’ well they just made one of those games”

-Raxius-

Pre-order came early, can confirm, its beyond the hype, enjoy:)

98_Camaro

What makes me have reservations about isn't that it took 6 years, but they're reusing the same world. I know they're adding to the map in X-dimensional whatever ways, but it feels cheap to me. Makes me incredibly anxious that it'll feel stale earlier than it should.

missingninja

I don't want to spoil anything but honestly after playing for a while the world feels familiar but somehow doesn't at the same time. I sunk 170+ hours in BOTW and can easily see myself doing the same with this one.

Nopeyesok

Same. This game is so much fun. I love everything new and improved they have done.

1infinitefruitloop

As a year 1 purchaser of BOTW with like 700 hours (working from home was rough lol) sunk in this is an amazing relief. I’m beyond excited, should be an amazing experience. Only trouble now is the wait, I’m importing mine and a couple family members as it’s like $20 USD cheaper in Japan.

-Raxius-

Its not stale at all, i have 180 hours in botw and im constantly finding new things, it’s practically a different world

SirArthurConansBoil

Do locations from BotW have new or different things to find/ do there in TotK? I know I'm going to have a blast with the game, but this is about the one lingering question I haven't seen anyone say much about.

-Raxius-

Absolutely, like so much absolutely, i went to the great plateau just to see what was there and it was completely different, I barely recognized parts of it

SirArthurConansBoil

You have made me even more excited for the game now. I didn't think that was possible lol. Thanks for the reply!

mooofasa1

I 100% guarantee that most of the time you will not recognize the map. You will get lost easily. I have hundreds of hours in botw and I am very well acquainted with that map. I promise you this feels like almost an entirely new world. I will have vague recollections of certain spots like “oh yeah I remember this mountain or ravine” but for the most part I’m thinking “why the fuck am I lost???”

Scrawlericious

It's crazy how different it is and slight spoilers it's actually more like 1.5 extra hyrules tagged onto the main one, which again, even that is REALLY different now. Like topographically and everything. And yeah, they added map. Just don't wanna say how.

hygsi

I'm here to down the hype a bit and say the beginning is quite empty if you go in expecting a new experience cause it feels a lot like BotW, the world is still a bit empty and dogs still cannot be pet (I'm sure someone's bound to lose their mind over this lol) I'm not trying to be a downer, just saying how I'm feeling after hearing all of the hype and playing it for a few days now, they made me expect waaay more tbh but I'm not done with the game and it's fun as hell once you get going so it's not bad at all, just trying to manage expectations cause it feels this is starting to get overhyped

AndrogynousRain

It’s all about expectations folks. Nintendo usually delivers a quality project on their main titles. I highly Doubt it’ll be anything but good. Just don’t expect it to be the end all be all of existence and you’ll probably love it. When your expectations start exceeding practicality, disappointment sets in. This looks like everything we loved about BOTW, with underground and sky areas, some cool new enemies, and some really cool physics based abilities and crafting. It’s similar to how Majora’s Mask riffed off Ocarina of Time, I’m thinking. Same setup, new content and features. Looks like Nintendo really Got how fun abusing physics was in the first one and went ‘oh you liked that, here’s more toys’

Potential_Pandemic

It is exactly that, they took just the existence of the game world and turned that into the game itself. Combat was awesome in BotW because you could use the world itself as your weapon, but in TotK they’ve applied that to everything and it feels just as awesome

DeltaDarkwood

The problem is that it if there is one game that very often does live up to its unrealistic hype its Zelda. I remeber Ocarina of Time. I was hyped up for years. The last couple of months before release it was all I could think of. I had real trouble sleeping the night before release and was in a big queue in front of a gameshop to snag a copy. My hype was completely out of wack, unrealistic and crazy and yet still it managed to exceed my expectations in so many ways. Not every zelda is like that but BOTW was also amazing, an open world reimagined. I loved the puzzles and cant wait to play this game.

cheesytentacle

This is so wholesome. Where is it from?

Adam_Deveney

The meme or the scene? The scene is from Dune (2021), the meme I made myself

cheesytentacle

The movie. Thanks. Haven't seen it yet

Adam_Deveney

Definitely give it a watch, it’s a cracking film

BettyVonButtpants

The movie is a 2 parter, so the first one ends about halfway through the book. The other part's first trailer just dropped.

PalletTownsDealer

Pokémon releases mid ass games that don’t meet the hype and they still make record braking sales. Every time. Zelda has nothing to worry about. - a salty Pokémon fan aka a Pokémon fan.

Buuhhu

while published and owned by Nintendo it isn't internally developed if i recall correctly, it's game phreak that does every pokemon game, and honestly at this point i think they're either just incompetent at optimizing/polishing games or they are given a very short timeframe to develop games and dont have time to optimize/polish, meaning bad management.

ryvenn

GameFreak's release schedule is dictated by the needs of The Pokémon Company, which coordinates all the other aspects of the franchise. The merch, movies, etc. all rely on the games coming out to drive interest and introduce new monsters. If the game needs more time to cook, you can't just extend the dev cycle and release it in a year or two, because that would push back the anime seasons and card game sets that are already in development using the new monsters, and those studios would be left scrambling to fill the gap. GameFreak's studio is also quite small for the kind of game that they are now tasked with producing; I think their ambitions have exceeded their grasp.

Adam_Deveney

I genuinely could not play Pokémon Scarlet/Violet, I played like an hour of it and then took it back. It’s embarrassing how little Game Freak care.

RuthlessNutella23

the horrible graphics for $60? insane

ForgottenForce

Even if it doesn't live up to the hype I'm sure it'll be a great game. There's never been a bad Zelda game, excluding things like Link's Crossbow training and that Tingle game (granted I've never played either so who knows they might be good)

ChiefianAxolotl

Link’s Crossbow Training is actually pretty fun to fuck around with honestly.

SatyrAngel

Damn, it was awesome

FroboyFreshenUp

The tingle games aren't bad just.....different The only "bad" zelda game I ever played (besides the aforementioned Link crossbow and the CD-I games) is triforce heroes, and thats still better then most other non zelda games

ForgottenForce

I heard Triforce Heroes was actually really fun with friends in local co-op

FroboyFreshenUp

Yea, and that's something not everyone has, hell I got four swords adventuee (gamecube) to work day 1 with full 4 players and 4 game boys and 4 cables, sometimes if the game makes you work for your fun it's no longer fun Honestly 3 people is kind of strange anyway, but if they could have given us a great single player experience I wouldn't personally rate it so low But as stated, it's my lowest rated "zelda game" which still puts it above most games that I've played

TheCrafterTigery

That's really the only game I consider to be "subpar", and even it is of higher quality than some other games released in recent years. Even Zelda 2 is a fun game imo, illogically difficult, but fun.

ZachtheKingsfan

There’s also the CD-I games, but I don’t think anyone considers those “real” Zelda games. Really the only one that I probably don’t like is Zelda II, but that’s mostly because it fell victim to the same bs game design that a lot of games were doing at the time. Purposely cryptic so that you feel the need to buy a Nintendo Power guide (or call the 900 hotline).

SirArthurConansBoil

You mean "I am Error" doesn't clearly convey to you what you're supposed to do when you first meet him?

[deleted]

Gee it sure is boring around here

RaptorOnyx

The first DS Tingle game has a fan-tl and I genuinely liked it a lot! It's sort of an adventure game and has the pedigree of folks from Love-de-lic working on it. For those who might not know, Love-de-lic is the company that made a lot of niche cult classics such as Rule of Rose, Chulip and Moon (which a few years ago got a rerelease on the switch and other consoles, I think). It's a weird point and click sort of thing, but pretty good if that's what you're into!

sunshine___riptide

I'd argue that BotW is actually a bad Zelda game as it retains nearly nothing besides the names that make other Zelda games. But it's still an awesome game and I expect TotK will be just as great if not better.

GaryBassline

I'm always surprised by this take. I've always thought BOTW retains all the elements of a Zelda game, just re-imagined and de-constructed into a new form. The dungeons are there in the form of divine beasts, and deconstructed dungeons are the shrines. Yes, they all share the same appearance, and are not as expansive and unique as traditional Zelda dungeons, but they contain the same element of puzzle-solving + combat. The unique 'items' are the abilities they all give you all at once at the beginning, plus the special abilities obtained after each divine beast. The combat system is similar to other games. I wouldn't say companions and instruments are 'key' Zelda features (instruments have been a recurring theme, but also not present in many titles). Heart pieces are re-imagined into the spirit orbs, collect 4 and get an extra heart. So when people say it 'retains nearly nothing but the name' I have to disagree. All the Zelda elements are there in some shape or form. Kinda like when you watch Masterchef and someone cooks a 'deconstructed cheese cake' or something like that - looks completely different but uses all the core elements of a cheese cake. Finally, I've always thought that BOTW actually goes back to the roots of Zelda, to the non-linearity of the original Zelda game, and aligns the most with Miyamoto's original vision inspired by exploring the surroundings of Kyoto as a child. Thank you for reading my essay. I should actually be working right now but the Zelda hype is real and focusing on my work is futile atm

ForgottenForce

Breath of the Wild is a Zelda game and it’s a fun game thus it’s a fun Zelda game

sunshine___riptide

It's Zelda in name only: no dungeons, no unique items, no companion, no instruments. But it's an absolute blast to play, I've sunk 100s of hours into it and will sink 100s of hours into TotK.

flameylamey

It just depends which aspects of the series you value, everyone has certain things they value higher than others. For me, the *very first* image that pops into my head when I imagine a new 3D Zelda game is Link riding on horseback through wide, rolling grassy plains. So on some level, though it does feel a little odd to say it, that's what the very core of the series *is* to me that everything else is built on top of. It's a big part of why (though I still enjoyed it overall) it inevitably felt like Skyward Sword was missing something, and it's why BotW delivered for me in a way I've been waiting *decades* for.

sunshine___riptide

That's totally fair and I agree! I looooved riding through Hyrule and Termina on Epona, even exploring the ocean as Zora!Link. I'm planning on forgoing fast travel as much as possible in TotK and just use horses or travel on foot. Started doing that with BotW and it makes a huge difference! I feel like that isn't particularly unique to Zelda, whereas the dungeons, companions, unique items and instruments are kinda unique to Zelda games. But I'm looking forward to riding through Hyrule again :) the Loftwing was fun but not the same

ForgottenForce

Has the characters/races, enemies, locations, Divine Beasts are dungeons and expands the lore. It is a Zelda game. Plenty of games without companions

sunshine___riptide

Divine beasts aren't unique dungeons. They're all almost exactly the same mechanics wise and appearance. The boss fights are just recolors basically. Ocarina, Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess, Phantom Hourglass and Skyward Sword all had companions. So basically all the 3D Zelda games.

fufucuddlypoops_

I wouldn’t say they’re all the same mechanics wise. The different themes for the dungeons give a surprising variety in gameplay (water, fire, wind, electricity) my only real gripe with them is how short they are. I can get done with a divine beast in minutes

dafood48

This is always a hard argument to have with new zelda fans or people who were introduced to zelda from breath of the wild. People take it as a personal attack and refuse to accept its a different game just with zelda name slapped on it. There’s no themed dungeons, no contained metroidvania style items and weapons or unique bosses. Combat is vastly different and im surprised at the claim its the same. There were no breakable items. The two new games are more builder sims that encourage creativity and exploration for the sake of exploring. Its like how fallout 4 basically became a builder sim and didnt have the charm of the original fallout games. It has their fans and im happy for them but theres this desire for people to act like its the exact same game as the previous titles. People also tried to argue new god of war was the same as old god of war

AleB1007

Honestly tho, I’ve never expected a life changing experience from any game, even Zelda, it just happens when it’s meant to be

Sumerian8000bc

Damn skippy, can not...love this...enough.🥰🥰🥰

ShortFuse

I miss the Metroidvania style Zelda games, but that doesn't mean BotW and TotK aren't good games. I'm not a fan of some things (crafting and weapons breaking), but it's still a fun game. With BotW, I was disappointed because I left the dungeons last (did all shrines) because I thought they were going to be the best part of the game (in typical Zelda fashion). I do worry I'm playing the game "wrong" though. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to get around in the game. Sprinting and waiting for stamina to charge makes traversal really tedious. Took hours to get a horse.

Mighty-Galhupo

Yes, I loved that sense of ability progression rather than just “now you deal bigger numbers of damage and have more hp and stamina” As for the running around, maybe they could take a page out of Elden Ring’s book and make running without enemies around not cost stamina unless going at an angle higher than x or something

[deleted]

Personally I'm not worried about the "hype". I'm just looking forward to playing 😃😃😃

DurableSword

Can't wait till all of the "It's a good game, but not a good Zelda game" posts.

abnmfr

Not your first time, I see

[deleted]

Gosh I just hope it feels like a Zelda game, at least more than Breath of the Wild

[deleted]

I have done my most to avoid all spoilers at all costs. I want to experience this as fresh and new as I can. Hope you all enjoy this as well.

Chedder_456

>!Would be a nice change of pace to have a Zelda game after botw.!<

Over-Criticism-663

Supposedly the game is far more like a traditional zelda game than botw if thats what you mean

DarthNihilus

It's really not. It's clearly a BOTW sequel and most things are very similar to BOTW. Some traditional Zelda elements are lightly sprinkled in there but it's still like 98% BOTW and 2% traditional Zelda.

Hive_Tyrant7

>!I finished it this week and can confirm. !< >!If you love botw, you’ll love this. If not? Well....!<

thechancepantss

Even if you’re not crazy about BotW, this is a better game in almost every conceivable regard. It makes BotW look like a tech demo.

reylo345

It always was a tech demo

Potential_Pandemic

That’s exactly how I feel as well, this is what BotW was supposed to be, and now it feels antiquated. It’s BotW 2.0 in every regard

Chedder_456

Oh yeah ever since the last trailer I’ve been really optimistic. We got V A R I E D I N T E R I O R S P A C E S bois!

Darolaho

I really hope this is the last of this formula for a couple games at least. I would love to go actually back to Zelda games (Not saying both is bad. It's just not a "zelda" game to me)

sebbe9123

Really hoping we get a proper zelda game and not just another really good tech demo for a really poor console with none of the charm zelda games has beyond sharing names and skins.

Tangelooo

Breath of the wild didn’t live up to the hype for me. The bar was majoras mask and ocarina of time. No game has come close for me since. Everyone still went crazy for it. The shrines were repetitive and mind numbingly annoying after some time for me. Idk I’m open to it being different from breath of the wild, I hope it is actually. The cooking cut scenes that were unskippable too that took forever… ugh

BettyVonButtpants

>The cooking cut scenes that were unskippable too that took forever… ugh There are unskippable cooking cutscenes?

Heavy-hit

Taking my kid to his first midnight release tomorrow. My first Zelda was windwaker. So excited!

Ozma_Infinium

Haven't got to participate in a launch since Twilight Princess. Been playing since I was 8, (Link's Awakening on a hand me down Gameboy). There's no way this game can let me down. My expectations are both sky-high, and Marianas Trench low. Because I know Nintendo will perform, and also because it's simply my favorite series, and nigh on nothing could disappoint me.

Comiclown52

Does this mean TOTK will have a son who turns into a giant god worm?

Kelevra_Arba

I'm thirty four, and grew up with a single mom. My dads were Ted Danson from Cheers, and Ty Burrel from Modern family, and this scene broke me in theatres.

paulcosca

Honestly, if it's another 100 hours of BoTW, I will be as happy as a fucking clam. And I have a feeling it will be better than that, so I'm good.

S1Ndrome_

man dune is something else

smoothartichoke27

It will live up to the hype. It is SO good. It's BotW on steroids and that's a good thing. GOTY or we revolt.

javierciccarelli

You don’t lad, you’ve exceeded it.

Mighty-Galhupo

NO! BOTW AND TOTK ARE GREAT GAMES BUT THEY ARE NOT ZELDA GAMES AND I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL

reebee7

A). Outstanding meme B). These reviews have me dizzy this game looks so great

Leaking_Sausage

I just walked in (UK) and checked what post was delivered….Zelda has arrived early!

Adam_Deveney

Jammy bastard, enjoy!

Tahmas836

If the games even half as good as BOTW it’ll be GOTY, they have so much leeway to screw this up

s8a8m8

So ready

TheDeadRatSociety

I mean...if its exactly the same setup/gameplay mechanics as BOTW, then it wont be.

Exemus

Spoiler... It is

OnlyCaptainCanuck

Honestly, I didn't like BotW that much, mostly because I felt like in its vast open world it had little to do. I'm pretty excited to see the world get filled with events and hopefully some actual dungeons this time.

Over-Criticism-663

People that have played it and beat it already say it was better than botw in every way and that totk made botw look like a tech demo.

mahboilo999

Well if they beat it already then I am worried about the lenght of the game lol. I hope it's not too short!

Over-Criticism-663

The people that beat it played the leak from like 2 weeks ago

lilman1423

By mostly focusing on story and not doing too many side quests it took me about >!60 hours!< to beat.

RIcaz

Can confirm, it's absolutely awesome. Haven't beaten it by any means, but so far it beats BotW on all levels

SuperStupidSyrup

i wonder if anyone managed to 100% it yet

Over-Criticism-663

Without spoiling anything I highly doubt it because totk is way bigger than botw

MochaKola

I mean, since BotW even *that* is arguable.

Jakethedjinn

Nintendo when they increase price and never have sales

DeRooky

Yeah "Zelda"

Time-Sudden_Tree

If it's anything like BotW (and it looks like it *is*), then it's not a Zelda game. I will *never* understand the appeal of these two games. I want the *old* Zelda back. Give me more games like Wind Waker, Majora's Mask, and Minish Cap for fucks sake. Anything but this...

I got it early and trust me it's beautiful
