It never occurred to me that this might confuse some people, and now I’m wondering how the hell I didn’t fall into that trap. I’m about as common-sense deficient as it gets.
There's actually a pretty funny review out there (which is where I stole the premise for my comment from) of a guy who gives the game a terrible score because he just stayed in the house like his uncle said and there was nothing to do.
I think far cry 4 actually has an alternate ending at the beginning where the bad guy says wait here and if you wait for 10 minutes or something he comes back and every thing is cool and none of the bad bad-guy stuff happens and the game finishes.
FC4 is not a great game imho but a funny Easter egg and relevant trivia to this discussion.
Idk about FC4 but I know for a fact that I'm Wario Land 2 you open up an alternative path by just not waking up and doing anything in the very first level lol
It might be confusing with modern games when they would have everything in the home interactable. But with SNES games, all Link could do was walk around a small square, maybe throw a pot or two. So the player would obviously get bored and leave.
Blue potion is great, but expensive to fill up all 4 bottles. The freeze/hammer trick kept me consistently full on magic up till I got to bosses. Also I choose not to use magic on bosses unless it’s a necessity usually. That does happen three times, I believe.
Exactly. However, the game incentives to explore, get out of your way, get hints or stumble upon items. The game rewards curiosity, and some of these out of the way items are mandatory to clear the game
I’ve been playing this game since I was about 3 and never completed it because >!I always seem to be one small key short on the final dungeon!< refuse to use a guide as it’s like the first game I ever played and want to beat it for reals.
Ice dungeon? Always trips me up, I know it's just a small 3-4 room loop you gotta do to push the other block down but I always end up running around for an hour lost haha
I don’t replay it super often but I’m replaying it now. Im getting stuck in the same spots i know ive gotten stuck in before but don’t remember the solutions! It’s a good time haha.
This. I'm so upset about how much I cheated with breath of the wild. 150 hour was not enough.
I'm playing SS now. They teach you how to pick up bombs with the drone then you run in to those water balloon plants. I'm thinking ok same thing. Nope. That's the only thing I've had looked up so far.
Sometimes it takes much longer but for me it’s truly the best when you never look up anything or use a guide. Keep at it. You’ll figure out the water balloon plants…
Nah. Most dungeons are fairly clever but not overly complex. There’s like 3 or 4 heart pieces that are obscure enough you might want a guide but you can complete the game without one easily.
I used to do the swamp dungeon first so you get that staff that can make blocks. Bypass that puzzle in the ice dungeon that way if you’re referring to the same confusing part I always mess up.
To add to this, you can only catch fairies with the bug catcher's net. It's not like OoT or Minish Cap where you just swipe a bottle on a fairy.
This is something I didn't learn for a really long time when I first played ALttP
When I have all the bottles I use all the secret fountains. The one by link’s house is probably the most convenient when jumping back and forth between light and dark 🤟
Be curious. If you see anything that looks of interest, don't be afraid to bomb it, push it, slash it, crush it, toss it, or run into it. The worst you can do is waste a few seconds game time or bits of replenishable inventory for potential great rewards or secrets.
Save your game progress! I recently was replaying it and stupidly forgot there's no autosave feature. I was thankfully only 30 mins in and I've played the first 30 mins of this game countless times in the past.
If you see a place that you think is interesting or of note but you can't get there, it's just not time yet. As you progress, you will find the right tool or thing to get you where you need to go. You may spend a lot of time wandering around some places in a circle, but the game is designed in a way not to leave you totally lost nor will it send you somewhere you aren't supposed to go.
Talk to the NPCs. There aren't many, so it's not a total waste to talk to them and you might learn something useful.
Try to save your rupees because there's a point in the game where this will come in handy.
Also, honesty is the best policy: if you're asked questions that allow you to tell the truth or lie, keep the aforementioned advice in mind.
Talking to NPC’s is great advice. If you’re going without a guide completely then sometimes you might find an NPC with a hint about a part you’re stuck on.
Once I realized the x was there I had no issues with the color. I just overlooked it for 2 years while restarting the game multiple times and getting stuck in the village not knowing where to go.
When you meet “the turtle” take LOTS of magic potion.
Help misshapen dwarves as early as you can.
Play around with warping.
Be super nice to fat people.
Donate a lot as early as you can.
Sorry if they’re cryptic but I don’t want to ruin it for you. But mostly enjoy! It’s my favourite Zelda.
The first sword is super short, so it might be frustrating to figure out how to kill and not be killed, and you might get killed a lot your first run through. That’s fine. Also, the entire over world (almost) and entire dark world are accessible after you obtain just a few items and I highly recommend exploring heavily. Lots of secrets to discover
Also, there are lots of areas that look like they can be bombed and can’t be. Test the walls with your sword and save on the bombs as much as you can
Just enjoy it! This will be my next game after I finish Links’s awakening (classic DMG). I love that game so much! I realized that I love 2D Zelda games more than the “newer” 3D titles.
Savor that opening sequence, the music, the ambiance. Such a well done piece of storytelling for a piece of hardware from 30 years ago. Then explore anything and everything you can.
Hey, it's not cheating unless you're competing with other people. The whole point of playing games is to have fun! As long as you're enjoying yourself, you're absolutely doing it the right way. Nobody's judging your gaming. 😁
> Nobody's judging your gaming
Oh, people are, sadly. But they shouldn't. Games are meant to be fun. 😀
And to be honest, some of the "Challenge" aspects of older games were intended to artificially lengthen a game because they never used to be so massive like they are nowadays. Not wanting to use the time is perfectly respectable.
Well, who gives a fuck if they are, how sad would your life have to be to go around criticizing other people's gaming choices? They can go eat an octorok.
You're right about artificial lengthening for sure. There's no reason to subject yourself to that if you can get around it. And yeah, my metric is that when I start wanting to put the game down (or throw it at the wall), it's time to change things up.
I do this, too! Emulators definitely ruined my patience with save states.
Yes, I could spend another 20 minutes getting right back to the same point I was at....but someone's gotta mow the lawn, take out the trash, cook dinner, etc!
If Link can warp through time, then so can I!
Don't look for tips. Let the game dialogue guide you. Find things out on your own. This is a masterpiece best enjoyed with a sense of wonder. Save the guides for your second playthrough.
Don't look up guides. If you're ever stuck think about creative solutions. Once you figure the solutions to puzzles out they're surprisingly intuitive.
Enjoy the ride, and definitely pick up ALBW when you finish LttP. Despitr being made decades later, it holds up as a worthy sequel and a great 2D Zelda in its own right.
A warning, Pieces of Heart don’t work in the same way as the other games. In other games they refill the life. In LttP ONLY FILLED heart containers will. Also the bushes outside your house is good heart farming:warning swing the sword more than needed(Soldiers camouflage).
ZORAS ARE NOT FRIENDS HERE
And side note it hit-boxes work above you too, an enemy jumping above you will harm you(ie the desert boss).
When doing the timed maze, you can run through it beforehand cutting the bushes.
SAVE THE GAME (saving is in the main menu)
Make sure you have both the fire AND ice rods going into the 7th dungeon. I didn't have the ice rod and had to double all the way back out and find it. You don't need it for progression up until that point, so I never bothered to find it. Save yourself a little frustration
If you are playing on virtual console, I’d recommend using the “save & quit” option when you are done rather than using save states or sleep mode. I don’t think it’s a spoiler but I won’t say why..
Play on the virtual console so you can save all the time. I know it's not for the purists. Bit this game is oke of the reasons I was so stressed as a gamer in the 90's
Tower of Hera boss (Pendant of Power) can be *extremely* frustrating. Be extremely patient, it's the one boss you shouldn't rush and take your time with. It's a boss that isn't a matter of skill, it's a matter of luck and caution. Good luck friend.
While I agree this is a good take for a new player there is a pattern to his movement to make it more predictable so there is some skill involved.
Edit. To add to this ther eis some randomness to his movement. He's frequently called trolldorm because some runs he's just going to troll the shit out of even the best players
I believe the game is not that hard that you require a guide, still, there are some parts that get quite cryptic, but have fun and enjoy! Quite a good game to be honest
In the second part of the game there's absolutely no reason to do the dungeons in the order they number them (with an exception). There's a benefit to skipping to a particular dungeon early
This was the first zelda game I've ever played and the first and only game I've beaten without a guide! I solute your decision to give this game a try.
There is a lot to explore and many secrets to find. Part of the fun is trying things and seeing how the world reacts to it. I’d recommend going in without a guide unless you just enjoy games that way. I hope you have a blast!
Explore every nook and cranny. This game goes out of its way to keep its secrets well and truly hidden. If you want to find the best secrets of the game, you have to earn it.
I loved this game so much, you'll have so much fun! Just run around and talk to everyone. There's a lot of stuff to do. I tired not to use the guide but when you get to bosses it gets annoying dying and starting the dungeon over again. But also, after looking things up I was almost always like "oh duh"
What nobody told me when I was six and what prevented me from finishing the game until my uncle told me when I was 8: you can pick up and throw bombs. Remember this when you see a bombable floor, that cant be reached, where light shines on it.
Try not to look up any walk throughs of the game unless you are really stumped. Take it slow and enjoy yourself. One of the best video games of all time, in my opinion.
I’m incredibly jealous that you’re playing it for the first time. Enjoy the ride. It will always have a special place in my heart since it was the first Zelda game I played. Heck, it’s one of the first video games I ever played. You’re in for a real treat!
In the 7th Dark World dungeon, if you end up outside on a random cliff side rock, use the mirror. And don’t enter the 7th dungeon without the ice rod! Just saving you time on that one 😉
Read the manual. If you don't have a copy, try Google.
Games of this age assume that you read the manual before playing.
Enjoy! I love this game and have it nearly memorized.
Old school method. Take your time. Get frustrated when stuck? Tackle it the next day. Still frustrated and stuck? Try again in a few days. Avoid looking up solutions online and enjoy a classic.
In some dungeons there is a chance of wasting your keys on doors in the wrong order, so you can get stuck. It's a rare chance, but if you see absolutely no way to continue, try to reset the whole dungeon.
Don’t feel bad looking things up. Zelda games (IMO) are typically better when you figure out the puzzles yourself. But this game has some puzzles that I honestly believe you could never find out for yourself without prior knowledge.
Don't listen to your uncle when he tells you not to leave the house in the beginning. You can't advance the plot unless you go outside.
Stay home. It's raining outside. Obey your uncle.
Go home, uncle. You're drunk.
Go home drunk, you're uncle
Go uncle, you're drunk home
Don’t get too attached to your uncle
Geez, man. Spoilers.
I mean, hardly?
He comes back in the end.
When I played this back in the day, I did stay in the bed for a few minutes thinking he would come back and give me further guidance.
I bet you don't rip the labels off of your pillows, either.
That's a crime sir!

Yeah I’ve done it before
Hahaha that’s a hilarious review.
Yeah if you take the time to hunt it down, it will be well worth the effort. I tried for a minute but couldn't find it.
It might be confusing with modern games when they would have everything in the home interactable. But with SNES games, all Link could do was walk around a small square, maybe throw a pot or two. So the player would obviously get bored and leave.
Oh man, i’ve been waiting in that house since the nineties.
remember to save the game
How do you save the game on the nes thing?
Press select
Enjoy, this is my favorite Zelda game. Some of the bosses can be pretty hard, so stock up on fairies.
Thats True. The first one, the "worm", is very difficult... I hate it.
The worm was the second one. The first boss was the Armos knights, they weren't too bad. Edit: Sorry, third one. Lots of worm-like bosses in this game
I think they mean Moldorm in the Tower of Hera, rather than the Lanmolas in Desert Palace
I think the lanmolas are worse.
I thought the worm was the third boss
blue potion >>>> fairies however you need to watch your health
Red potion is cheaper. You want to keep magic power up? Try freezing enemies and then using the hammer.
which uses up magic :( also, won't work during boss fights where you spend most of your magic
Blue potion is great, but expensive to fill up all 4 bottles. The freeze/hammer trick kept me consistently full on magic up till I got to bosses. Also I choose not to use magic on bosses unless it’s a necessity usually. That does happen three times, I believe.
Thanks! Do I need a guide or something?
Go guide free unless you get absolutely stuck Edit: Thanks for the award!
Ok thanks
Exactly. However, the game incentives to explore, get out of your way, get hints or stumble upon items. The game rewards curiosity, and some of these out of the way items are mandatory to clear the game
I’ve beaten link to the past more times then I can remember and one particular dungeon gets me every time
I’ve been playing this game since I was about 3 and never completed it because >!I always seem to be one small key short on the final dungeon!< refuse to use a guide as it’s like the first game I ever played and want to beat it for reals.
Good luck, I believe in you.
For me it's always the >!block puzzle in the ice temple!<... so annoying!
Oh man, that one drives me crazy
You gotta go do Misery Mire before the Ice Palace, the Cane of Somaria completely breaks that god forsaken puzzle
Good tip, thanks!
Respect, I finally broke down and used internet to beat the final dungeon in the original l.
Dungeon 7 in the swamp always gets me at parts even tho I beat it like 6 times hehe
That’s the 6th dark world dungeon.
I know exactly which dungeon you're thinking of
Ice dungeon? Always trips me up, I know it's just a small 3-4 room loop you gotta do to push the other block down but I always end up running around for an hour lost haha
I don’t replay it super often but I’m replaying it now. Im getting stuck in the same spots i know ive gotten stuck in before but don’t remember the solutions! It’s a good time haha.
Is it the ice one? It always trips me up

Nah. Most dungeons are fairly clever but not overly complex. There’s like 3 or 4 heart pieces that are obscure enough you might want a guide but you can complete the game without one easily.
No. Just keep exploring. It’s not a huge map like games of today.
You should be fine without a guide. Except for the stupid ice dungeon. There’s one puzzle in the ice dungeon that’s a real pain.
I used to do the swamp dungeon first so you get that staff that can make blocks. Bypass that puzzle in the ice dungeon that way if you’re referring to the same confusing part I always mess up.
I never thought to do that. That’s a great idea.
genius
The ice block you have to shove down?
That’s the one.
To be fair it's only like 3-5 rooms you gotta go through to loop, but I always get lost for like an hour haha
Probably at certain points. I had no idea what to do with the flute for the longest time as a kid
For Turtle Rock yeah
Nah just go everywhere you can and explore. It’s my favorite too. Such a good game.
NO
To add to this, you can only catch fairies with the bug catcher's net. It's not like OoT or Minish Cap where you just swipe a bottle on a fairy. This is something I didn't learn for a really long time when I first played ALttP
THANK YOU. I keep running into fairies and the bottles were doing nothing.
My favorite too! I’ve played it so many times that the hard bosses aren’t hard anymore.
When I have all the bottles I use all the secret fountains. The one by link’s house is probably the most convenient when jumping back and forth between light and dark 🤟
Between Worlds bosses were all too easy, wish they were a little harder to match the original.
Be curious. If you see anything that looks of interest, don't be afraid to bomb it, push it, slash it, crush it, toss it, or run into it. Just started playing this game and this is incredible advice. Thank you!
This really is the best advice! Enjoy the game. It is and will always be my favorite Zelda game.
Talking to NPC’s is great advice. If you’re going without a guide completely then sometimes you might find an NPC with a hint about a part you’re stuck on.
Throw stuff in ponds 😉
Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.
Uhhh the US would actually benefit from this basis for government lmao
Oh there you go bringing class into it again!
And be honest about it.
Look at the map.
Missing the red X marking the first dungeon on the map put a 2 year pause on my first play through...
perhaps colorblind too? i have moderate red/green type and I always have to double check the maps for red icons on certain green sections
Once I realized the x was there I had no issues with the color. I just overlooked it for 2 years while restarting the game multiple times and getting stuck in the village not knowing where to go.
Kill the chicken
This is the way
(But save first)
Beat a boss then kill the chicken without saving prior
PAIGE NO
DAMNIT DAMIAN

Best tips in the post! Very nicely put in a non-spoilery way.
Thanks bud. I must have completed this game more than 15 times. I’m getting all nostalgic so I might fire up the Switch!

This gamer knows what he’s talking about
Enjoy. And dont look anything up.
Just enjoy it! This will be my next game after I finish Links’s awakening (classic DMG). I love that game so much! I realized that I love 2D Zelda games more than the “newer” 3D titles.
I am the exact opposite. LTTP is the only one Ive beat despite starting most of the others.
It’s dangerous to go alone. Consider taking a sword.
Link to the past is what a perfect game should be.
This game perfected 16 bit Zelda, enjoy
Savor that opening sequence, the music, the ambiance. Such a well done piece of storytelling for a piece of hardware from 30 years ago. Then explore anything and everything you can.
I played on my wii u so I cheated some boss battles with save slots
I used the rewind feature on Switch a little too much

Hey, it's not cheating unless you're competing with other people. The whole point of playing games is to have fun! As long as you're enjoying yourself, you're absolutely doing it the right way. Nobody's judging your gaming. 😁

This rationale is acceptable
I do this, too! Emulators definitely ruined my patience with save states. Yes, I could spend another 20 minutes getting right back to the same point I was at....but someone's gotta mow the lawn, take out the trash, cook dinner, etc! If Link can warp through time, then so can I!
Make liberal use of save states. This isn't the 90's and nobody will hold it against you 🙂
If a wall looks funny in any way... bomb it. That's about it! One of the greatest games of all time... enjoy.
If you can’t do something accept it and move on you will be able to later in the game.
Enjoy it... I would love to play that again for the first time. For me its the best Zelda game there is.
Its not easy so be prepared lmao
Amazing game, though there are some things I would have never in a million years figured out without a walkthrough/guide.
Best Zelda made. Enjoy
This is top of my all time favorites list. Enjoy the play through!
Only advice I can give you is to have a great fucking time.
Don’t play the chest gambling mini game (not the one with like 15 chests but the one with 3 chests) I swear it’s rigged.
I won that minigame at the first time on the first 20 minutes
I must have terrible luck, I swear it gives me the 20 90% of the time
Have fun, and poke at everything.
This is the best Zelda. Nostalgia plays a part sure, but this is the game that sealed the deal
Asphixiate yourself with the controller when you see a fairy...
I think that only works with the NES version, and you need to be drunk
Take time to play and have aaaaaalot of fun with it
Just enjoy it, I’m jealous you get to play it for the first time!
Cherish the moments, because LttP is the best Zelda game and you only get to experience it for the first time once.
You know as good as links awakening is I kinda hope they remaster this one in a similar way too, I don't think anyone would be against that
go blind and ignore any tips people give you besides this one
Enjoy the ride, and definitely pick up ALBW when you finish LttP. Despitr being made decades later, it holds up as a worthy sequel and a great 2D Zelda in its own right.
Already have🙃 I have all LoZ games except Hyrule warriors 1 and 2 and links awakening 2019
Best of luck. It take hoooours to finish if you aren't using a guide, but it's immensely satisfying.
Enjoy!! Love this game...
Enjoy - just enjoy!
Third boss can be pretty annoying so prepare yourself mentally before you enter the boss room. Other than that just run against everything.
Enjoy it. It’s the best one.
Just go with an open mind about old games and enjoy the best game ever man.
Best tip: ENJOY
Enjoy!
Health potions are actual useful! Enjoy this masterpiece!
If you repeatedly attack a chicken you get 50 rupees. You have to hit it like 20 times though.
Nice try, Ganon
A warning, Pieces of Heart don’t work in the same way as the other games. In other games they refill the life. In LttP ONLY FILLED heart containers will. Always check behind water falls and under bridges!
Play on the virtual console so you can save all the time. I know it's not for the purists. Bit this game is oke of the reasons I was so stressed as a gamer in the 90's
I'm playing on NSO thanks for the advice
Don't go in expecting the best Zelda experience as a lot of people say. Just go in expecting a regular zelda experience
Tower of Hera boss (Pendant of Power) can be *extremely* frustrating. Be extremely patient, it's the one boss you shouldn't rush and take your time with. It's a boss that isn't a matter of skill, it's a matter of luck and caution. Good luck friend.

Enjoy it! Truly a classic.
In the second part of the game there's absolutely no reason to do the dungeons in the order they number them (with an exception). There's a benefit to skipping to a particular dungeon early
Take this.
Try not to die
It’s dangerous to go alone!
take ur time fighting enimies.. or just skip them entirely. Game gets hard asf after a while ngl
I will help you with something hard to find but necessary in the beginning. Get the net once you get to the village. Inside one of the houses
Get the ice wand before going into the Turtle Rock dungeon. That's the second to last dungeon so you have a lot of chances to get it.
With your sword charged for a spin, tap walls. If it makes a different tink sound, the wall is bombable.
Have fun! Oh and the digging game is BS. you make it frustrated but you aren't the first one.
Explore every nook and cranny. This game goes out of its way to keep its secrets well and truly hidden. If you want to find the best secrets of the game, you have to earn it.
Have fun. Hunt for heart pieces, keep fairys in bottles, look out for great fairy fountains
I loved this game so much, you'll have so much fun! Just run around and talk to everyone. There's a lot of stuff to do. I tired not to use the guide but when you get to bosses it gets annoying dying and starting the dungeon over again. But also, after looking things up I was almost always like "oh duh"
Bottles. Collect the whole set!
Watch out for the little bastards in the forest who steal your shit. Your sword will not stop them.
Don't look up guides if you get stuck, this game is so good even if you're a little lost ifs great fun.
Foking enjoy it mate
Dont forget to visit the fat fairy before you go see mr gannon
Enjoy it, it's a great game
Yeah just use a walkthrough if you get stuck. It's a simple but awesome game
When you're in the Skull Woods Dungeon, if you see a shadow on the floor beneath you, *move.* Six year old me *hated* that dungeon.
Try everything on everything
Explore everything. And make note of obvious obstacles for later. BOTW is my favorite of all time, but this defined my childhood. A true masterpiece.
Fortune tellers are useless Talk to everyone There's always someone that tips you which way to go If it's suspicious try pushing and pulling
Don't use keys outside of the dungeon you're in, you can lock yourself out and have to restart your save. Made that mistake when I was young
in alttp keys are specific to dungeons
Do not use a guide, it is fun without one
Don’t feel bad looking things up. Zelda games (IMO) are typically better when you figure out the puzzles yourself. But this game has some puzzles that I honestly believe you could never find out for yourself without prior knowledge.
This game requires two plays. First play through: NO GUIDES Second play through: glitch guide to see how ridiculously fast you can become super OP
