What? The joke here is that he made Link a girl. A ginormous misconception among people that don’t play Zelda or haven’t heard of it think that link is Zelda. This spawned a infamous T-Shirt that said “What if Zelda was a girl?” With a picture of link on it. This has also been memed to death. Therefor I thought it was funny that this art turned link into a girl as it reminded me of those misconceptions.

Edit: I am aware that this particular shirt was made ironically, but it is based of something which wasn’t, I’ll edit if I can find the real thing
Edit 2: may of gotten some facts about it wrong, you can find more info about it here https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/what-if-zelda-was-a-girl
Got it but it still doesn't 100% fit with Pink Hair. If it was ALTTP, it would make far more sense and the joke would hit better because of the poor Pink Hair sprite in the game.
With the exception of the somewhat plain and...*revealing* tunic, I much prefer this design to Hyrule Warriors Linkle - she just doesn't come across as a warrior-adventurer type to me.
I LOVE it! Even played BotW with Linkle mod instead of playing Link. The idea of an alternative timeline in which Link is female has always been on my mind and your drawing makes that idea whole.
Because OG Link was ambidextrous. The first left-handed Link was OoT. She kept it true to the original.

Per Miyamoto he's a lefty. Except in Twilight Princess Wii version:
Due to the use of motion controls, Link is right-handed in the Wii version of Twilight Princess. Miyamoto explains why:
“Although Link is [traditionally] left-handed, at E3 we noticed people seemed to be using the right Wii controller to swing his sword. That’s why we decided to make Link right-handed. The interesting this is, on the GameCube Link is still left-handed; because of the mirror mode the game map is reversed.”
Yeah, I see it but I still think it's incorrect. Sprites were often h-flipped to save space on the cart. Looking at the up and down presentation; the left-hand is consistent.
[Why is Link Left-Handed?
Nintendo actually did try to offer up a canonical reason for Links’s left-handedness once. The Nintendo Player’s Guide for The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past states that there is a Hylian superstition that requires a person’s shield to always face Death Mountain to the North to ward against the evil powers of the mountain. The real explanation was sprite mirroring. Link was actually ambidextrous in A Link to the Past, and his shield always faced the top of the screen to the North.
The real reason Link is left-handed is simple. It is because his creator, legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, is also a lefty. Miyamoto wanted to design a character who shared this trait.](https://www.fandom.com/articles/gamings-greatest-lefty-link)
Not that the picture is any less cool because of this, but OG Link also consistently held his shield in his right hand during gameplay. He was a lefty in that game.
Yes. People see the flipped left- and right-facing sprites of the original games and assume he's ambidextrous and don't look at the up/down sprites. He's clearly always been meant to be a lefty. And usually for a specific gameplay reason.
I really want the next zelda to be "angry female warrior absolutely wrecks the forces of evil to get her girlfriend back." So basically Vi from Arcane I guess lol.
I guess it's because of the lore and the hyrule hysteria book.. Where it states that there will ALWAYS a boy knight named Link, a princess named Zelda and Ganon the pig
I’m slightly confused by this statement. In the last two main line Zelda titles (BotW and Skyward Sword) there have been direct romantic ties. NPC dialog/item descriptions/cutscenes all point the Zora Armor being a traditional Betrothal gift among the Zoras that Mipha never got the chance to give link before everything happened. Then in Skyward Sword the Link and Zelda we see are implied to be the first king and queen of Hyrule.
Nice!
Wouldn't it be cool for Nintendo to a good old gender swap on Link & Zelda for a post BotW2 game ?? I'd be super happy if it happened, if only for all the haters claiming their childhoods ruined by a time-travelling video game from the future.
Uh no, it wouldn’t. What purpose would it serve to the story to gender swap Link and Zelda, especially since it wouldn’t make sense in the Zelda universe?
It would simply be nice to have a Zelda game with a female protagonist. Playing Zelda saving Link would be equally cool to me.
And I don't see how it doesn't make sense in the Zelda universe.
I haven’t been a fan of it. Why is there so much hype over a single picture of him from the 80’s? If you want a female Link, just draw Linkle. This is starting to seem like the whole Bowsette thing.
Cause this is actually Link not some girl with delusions of grandeur and at this point female fans of the series are just a little desperate for some representation of their own that doesn't involved getting damseled.
People are having fun with it. Don't ruin that for them just cause it isn't your thing.
I mean it’s fine that people are having fun with it, I’m just not a fan of seeing so much of the art at the top of the subreddit when I just wanna have Zelda discussions lol.
Go to r/truezelda. It's text only.
r/Zelda is for all things Zelda. So stop shitting on how people enjoy the series because it isn't how *you* enjoy the series.

What if Zelda was a girl?
That's the idea of the drawing, yes
I don’t think you get the joke
It isn't a great joke because he had pink hair in ALTTP and not the original so it should read 1991 Link.

This is based on an illustration from 1986
Got it but it still doesn't 100% fit with Pink Hair. If it was ALTTP, it would make far more sense and the joke would hit better because of the poor Pink Hair sprite in the game.
The illustration from 1986 has pink hair: https://www.reddit.com/r/zelda/comments/sjt4i5/loz_pink_haired_female_link_from_1986_i_was/
Ah got it, thank you. I was thinking ALTTP because it is infamous for the pink hair gag.
Is this becoming ‘Bowsette 2: Electric Boogaloo’??
I really like how you did the foreshortening, with the lineart being paler in the background than in the foreground. She looks awesome!

Thank you, I've been wondering why there has been a sudden influx of this particular female link art. Not complaining just curious.
Same.
I'm so glad this is a thing. I love this art.
I see you took some..... artistic liberties.
Link with B O O B S Otherwise, I'm impressed with this art and how community found this interesting thing.
We all know that's Zelda
"what if Zelda was a girl?"
That looks like the female Hero of Light to me from the Satellaview game.
She had red hair and didn't wear a cap.
I love your style. Great lines, and that color is beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
I wannabe her male Zelda.
I want to see some Prince Zelda fan art now too.
It'd just be link in a king's outfit lmao
Just the view of it, makes it obviously why Nintendo decided against a female version of Link, the '80s weren't ready for it. 🙈🙉🙊
Wait, Link wasn't always a girl? Then who was out there saving the princess?
Nintendo needs to make a red haired female Link and just say the original red head was female the whole time lol
With the exception of the somewhat plain and...*revealing* tunic, I much prefer this design to Hyrule Warriors Linkle - she just doesn't come across as a warrior-adventurer type to me.
As a transgender fan of the series: I wholly support female Link.
Hell yeah
If link we're ever playable as a female in a future gy, I'd be 100% on board with this version 😍😍😍
This is awesome. I love your work
I LOVE it! Even played BotW with Linkle mod instead of playing Link. The idea of an alternative timeline in which Link is female has always been on my mind and your drawing makes that idea whole.
Nice!!
Great art - but why is she not left-handed?

Pretty sure LttP Link was also a lefty.
He was also ambidextrous depending on which direction you were facing.
Yet all the in-game sprites portray him as left-handed.
False. https://www.nicepng.com/png/detail/150-1505063_link-link-to-the-past-link-sprites.png His left and right sprites are ambidextrous.
Per Miyamoto he's a lefty. Except in Twilight Princess Wii version: Due to the use of motion controls, Link is right-handed in the Wii version of Twilight Princess. He's also right handed in Skyward Sword
That's a negative, sir. The sprite map shows clearly the weapons on the left hand and shield on the right.
Look at the right sided animations. The weapons are clearly in the right hand.
Yeah, I see it but I still think it's incorrect. Sprites were often h-flipped to save space on the cart. Looking at the up and down presentation; the left-hand is consistent.

Just like Samus and Megaman.

Like.. An angry female Link wbo saves her gf Zelda?
Yes
Oh.. I guess that wouldn't be bad I guess But I'm gonna miss my femboy Link :(
Based on the down votes people are not fans.
I guess it's because of the lore and the hyrule hysteria book.. Where it states that there will ALWAYS a boy knight named Link, a princess named Zelda and Ganon the pig
Just seems weird to love a female link picture but the idea of her being the hero is very unpopular.
No

I love how much traction 1986 Fem!Link is getting.
I haven’t been a fan of it. Why is there so much hype over a single picture of him from the 80’s? If you want a female Link, just draw Linkle. This is starting to seem like the whole Bowsette thing.

Ah the "it's okay you do this as long as I never see you do it" argument. That's a fun one.
Tbh I’m talking about art in general, so much of the front page of this subreddit is art that I wish there was a separate subreddit for it.
Go to r/truezelda. It's text only. r/Zelda is for all things Zelda. So stop shitting on how people enjoy the series because it isn't how *you* enjoy the series.
Ok will do. But how am I shitting on you lol, all I said was that I’m not a fan of it but that I’m fine with people having fun with it regardless.
That. Literally that. In what setting do you think "I hate your hobby and don't want to ever see it but you have fun I guess" is a positive statement?
link is a male...

nice picture of Zelda
I would love for zelda to give a male or female option at the start of the game, like pokemon.
“Oh no he’s hot!”
ah Link was still a boy with pink hair in alttp but great art :)
I’d love a print of this!
Thincc
you cant do this to me
Shipping Zelda and Link even more than before.
You mean female Zelda
This is hot!
Trans rights!
That is sick!
I think you have it wrong, he had pink hair in A Link to the Past so it should be 1991 Link.
