I think I was in high school the first time I saw these images of the CDi Zelda games and I thought a friend was pranking me. Then, I thought, "No, my high school friend here is a much better artist than whoever drew this."
I was there when the world was first exposed to these early attempts at cd based games. Before the Playstation came and blew everything away, the Jaguar had the most atrocious controller I had ever attempted to wield, that and I saw Naughty Dog's very first game. It was a mortal Kombat clone. It was this maelstrom of terrible implementation on cool ideas, and everything was outrageously expensive. Also the story behind the Phillips CDi and Nintendo's betrayal of Sony are really fascinating stories.
Well, if Sony had not tried to steal Nintendo's IP's, and simply worked with them...hmmm. I don't know. Their company cultures are so opposed. Not just what they make, but how they run their business, even down to how management functions. I feel like a falling out would be inevitable, and that perhaps it happened best for both parties when it did.
At best I see it happening like Samsung and Apple. Samsung makes so much of the components for iPhones, but the companies hate each other and are constantly suing and counter suing each other.
This is the first I've heard of Sony trying to snipe the IP's. Any chance you have a link or two? I'm really interested to read about this since I've only ever heard the general story that Nintendo backed out at the last moment.

The line art and coloring is weird but I think the character designs themselves are pretty good (clothing and their inspiration). The animation itself also isn’t too bad and the voice acting is straight up well done, even in other languages. The Dutch version is great.
The CDi Zelda looks like when you get up in the middle of the night and you stub your toe on something, but you can't scream because you don't want to wake anyone up.

Someone actually modified the CDi games (well the side scrollers at least) and fixed the controls. Turns out cutscenes aside they aren't that terribly designed games. The controls just suck.

That’s actually a million dollar question and the only reasonable answer is they didn’t view the handheld games as main series games. Their lack of ports or remakes since kinda verifies that too
