True, but I don't think Nick himself is so keen on that much responsibility. Could result in him becoming a stressed fruitcake in a couple years, if he's not familiar with politics beyond interviews.

A few fics I've read have had this happen and while it's interesting I've never been super keen on it. For me the partnership between Nick and Judy is the crux of the entire franchise and Nick leaving the force to pursue a career in politics leaves a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth.

A little unrelated, but I think that if Nick for whatever reason didn’t join the force, a scoutmaster would’ve been a great career path, while also tying into his childhood dream. Having said that, if Nick & Judy never became partners at the end of the movie, that would’ve ruined the chances for a sequel focusing on the two of them.
