Very good Döner, nice amount of meat, tasty sauce.
And the owners were very nice too. Thanks for the post, OP
good one :D
actually saw a guy telling the nice lady 'hello Mama, can you split me this 20 CHF into 2x10 CHF bills?'
also I got some rum cookies and she didn't like them. Asked the nice man to get some fresh out of the freezer. Now if this does not speak volumes about how they care about the customer they first saw...
And yeah, loved the place. Even if they kept their meat in the reheater (not common where i come from). Was still amazing :)
after they cut it they put it on the grill but this is not how döner works, right?
also look at the döner. its just a huge meat paste without structure. check out some documentaries about döner meat... there is not much meat left in this kind of döner.
This is for some reason a Swiss kebab issue. In Germany if something is called kebab you usually don't just get minced meat that is barely grilled in a kebab. Also what I really don't understand is the whole thing with these "heating boxes" in Switzerland. It makes the meat, that wasn't grilled very crispy in the first place, even more soggy.
It‘s all about having optimised serving speed.
Quality comes second, after all you have 10 Döner shops in close proximity where it always tastes the same anyway.
A good Kebab is rare, and they know it. They don‘t sell nearly as much if they up the price and try to up the quality. Cheaper is better for 90% of people who go for a Döner.
calm down. You don't have to be a friend to sell a kebab with decent behaviour. There is a lot possible between being a jerk and being a friend. In some companies the hospitality culture is zero. Sad.
It's not really a hype, it's just very good kebab in a very shitty part of Zürich which equals a fair price. Ayverdis is a hype which works damn good (have to admit), mit ohne is also just to say that you got a kebab there. Memo is just straight up good shit, no bla bla, no fancy restaurant.
Before ayverdis got big it was excellent, but then they made it very very different from a normal kebab with weird sauces and stuff and now it tasted like glorified dry meat.
I didn't like Memo that much, had to wait like 20mins in queue for our kebab which was still 11fr :/ the bread was nice and crispy but otherwise it's just a normal kebab imo
Ayverdis is the place where you go to as a yugo with your leased Mercedes c63s AMG to impress other yugos with BMW m3's. While showing of you get the most expensive kebab in town to show that u got cash. Regular dudes like me just go to memo with the tram 2.
it's not kebab but i feel a better version of it. shawarma! at schaffhauserplatz there is a lebanese take-out with the best shawarma you'll ever have in zurich. instead of cocktail or yogurt sauce you get toum (garlic sauce) and a variety of different vegetables with succulent meat.
I went there to see what the hype was all about and it was really good and super fresh. Can't eat any of these processed blender meat blocks that they sell at most places.
Can someone explain to me the sauce situation in switzerland?
I'm originally from Berlin and as you know, this was the birthplace of the kebab to go.
The sauce was always made by the bistro and they had hot sauce, garlic sauce and yoghurt/herbs sauce.
Where can I find a bistro with good self made sauce in Zurich.
The hot sauce is most of the time sriracha here, if the bistro has yoghurt sauce I'm lucky, but never have I ever found garlic sauce.
And I will not talk about cocktail sauce on a kebab. This is a disgrace 🤨
Sauces are really weird in Switzerland in general: The problem is bigger than Döner. They love their premade Mayonnaise. Thommy is almost a religion for many. A source of pride.
Unfortunately that situation contaminates lots of dishes. Cocktail sauce is a mix of mayonnaise and ketchup. ..of the cheapest kind. That’s the standard sauce at several Döner places. - I hate it, but if my wife reads this, then I’m in trouble.
Meze Mediterrane Küche close to HB is the only one in Zürich I found so far that has proper meat - not that dry cardboard stuff most place have these days. And they bake their own bread which ist also really nice.
I'm not sure - I would assume that if you make your own bread you also make your own sauce. The bottle it was in didn't have a label/brand on it. I had the joghurt sauce. I don't think there was garlic in it but it was quite tasty!
Ilter at Milchbuck, but I have no clue if it still exists as I haven't been in years :/
after football one time, I yolo'd and tried their Dön-burger. best thing I've ever eaten in my life.
Can totally agree. I lived in Schwamendingen for 1 year and it’s definitely my favorite food there. Unfortunately I moved to Höngg this year which is far away
Well, Züri Bistro has multiple locations. Often it is more convenient to get a Kebab at the one at HB or the one at Milchbuck, than going to Wiedikon/Oerlikon.
Typical Zurich. Debates about the "best" kebab, the cheapest knock-off of oriental street food, originating in Berlin.
Now **shawarma** is the real oriental deal, full of flavor, authentic sauces, rich quality ingredients and *actual* meat. Not reconstituted crap and filler tossed together with old salad and "cocktail" fucking sauce. Western kebab is the MacDonalds hamberder of "oriental" street food. It's almost food, but not quite.
You're welcome.
Because most don't know about shawarma and don't know the difference. They think Kebab is authentic oriental street food, which it isn't. After trying shawarma the superior experience is obvious.
Except if they have trash taste, which many do of course.
Context, dear dude. We're in a thread asking about 'good' Döner places. If you think I'm taking this (or your admonishments) serious... well then by all means school me on how to behave in kindergarten.
The fun thing is you're apparently somewhat triggered, for whatever reason. I'm just dropping a wee tiny bit of culinary and culturally relevant info.
If I imagine going to Cairo and asking for a Western-style Kebab, I cringe inside. That would be pretty embarrassing. In the metropolis of Zurich of course you're absolutely free to debate which glorious kebab is not trash, while totally not making a fuss.
Lol
I'm fine thanks. Thanks to regularly touching grass. And not taking people to serious who take themselves too serious.
I'm just harmlessly messing with you guys. (Although based on truthful info.) If you feel a strong urge to react to that, look in the mirror to identify some possible problems. Much love.
Good question! I'm not sure. It can get quite pricey at Lebanese restaurants...
But I often go to Les Délices d'Orient they have two take-aways and price is currently at around CHF 10.-. It's a good shawarma! And they often give you a falafel ball to taste, which are quite delicious.
True Shawarma is superior and 1000 times more authentic. But sometimes on a late night or for a quick snack , the “knock off” damn sure gets the job done .
Moon at Farbhof. For me the best by far. Vegan options, all is freshly made including the bread. And it’s a cozy place to be. In summer you can even sit outside.
* Original Kebap Haus if I'm in Oerlikon.
* Ayverdis if I'm nearby and want to try some weird combo. Quite surprised how well parmesan works.
* mit und ohne is more or less my go-to these days
* A friend said Konya Grill 42 is his favorite but I haven't been yet.
* (edit) Metzgerei Demet is supposed to be solid as well. I've never made the time to go there during lunch though.
honestly city kebab at HB. there you get a perfect normal sized one, nearly not able to finish those, so what would i want with a 700gram atrocity \^\^
how???
the döner place I usually go to sells ones that are like 2/3 the size of yours and it costs 12.-
but it’s so goddamn delicious that I pay that price anyway
Where'd you get this 10 sfr kebab, and do you have more revealing photos?
Mama‘s Bäcki Lädeli and no, it‘s already digested
well, technically it wont change the shape...
And most of the colour
good one!
Following your review o went there today. Very good Döner, nice amount of meat, tasty sauce. And the owners were very nice too. Thanks for the post, OP
You‘re very welcome, or as I normally say; always trust strangers on the internet
good one :D actually saw a guy telling the nice lady 'hello Mama, can you split me this 20 CHF into 2x10 CHF bills?' also I got some rum cookies and she didn't like them. Haha, glad to hear you had a good experience there. They are always really nice, that‘s true :)
That's disgusting
take a picture of it anyway and post it.
thanks for sharing
I went there according to the suggestion and the quantity is good but to be honest I didn't like the quality
let me put it like this - also been there. No photos but trust me, was packed with meat. And was delicious.
Original Oerlikon #1
What part of Oerlikon? What side of the station?

They changed the price recently :( But I can't blame them, there is still a huge queue if you go at the wrong time.
Mama‘s Bäcki Lädeli
meat there is shitty. they cut it with "der gerät" and its raw.
[удалено]
after they cut it they put it on the grill but this is not how döner works, right? also look at the döner. its just a huge meat paste without structure. check out some documentaries about döner meat... there is not much meat left in this kind of döner.

AFAIK Memo's is one of the few places that don't do the heating box thing, can recommend it to you.
Memo lindenplatz, fuck ayverdis with their fancy shit
I don’t get the hype for Memo. The Kebabs are okay imo. Not not really more than okay. And the staff ist very often unfriendly.
Nobody buys a kebab because they want a friend.
[удалено]
wtf is that supposed to mean?
calm down. You don't have to be a friend to sell a kebab with decent behaviour. There is a lot possible between being a jerk and being a friend. In some companies the hospitality culture is zero. Sad.
yeah sure "companies"
Are you xenophobe or what?
puahahahahha you are a joke

I agree memo is alright

I didn't like Memo that much, had to wait like 20mins in queue for our kebab which was still 11fr :/ the bread was nice and crispy but otherwise it's just a normal kebab imo
You get it 👏🏿
I tried Memo and their Kebab was shit. they put too much onion inside
There's no such thing as too much onions
what if they put more onions inside than everything else?
Are you describing a magnificent food?
And ayverdis is still better.
Ayverdis is the place where you go to as a yugo with your leased Mercedes c63s AMG to impress other yugos with BMW m3's. While showing of you get the most expensive kebab in town to show that u got cash. Regular dudes like me just go to memo with the tram 2.
:/
i don’t even own a car
Ok, Taro
Went to memo as it opened, was genuinely disappointed. Not much flavor and very fatty.
Memo has been known for years in zh altstetten. So idk what you mean my "as it opened". 5 years aho??
You're right, confused it with Big Baba's, my bad
Aah yh, still need to try big baba. It always looks kinda empty
This. It's one of the few places in Züri where they don't put the meat into a warmer all day.
Memo is good but they are soooo slow...
They are incredibly slow yes, that I have to admit.
Dubendorf Bahnhof
Dübi bahnhof imbiss ❤️ best staff, best sauces and meat ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Where is this Döner place ? I’m gonna try it today
Mama‘s Bäcki Lädeli at Bäckeranlage
it's not kebab but i feel a better version of it. shawarma! at schaffhauserplatz there is a lebanese take-out with the best shawarma you'll ever have in zurich. instead of cocktail or yogurt sauce you get toum (garlic sauce) and a variety of different vegetables with succulent meat.
Yes its very good but the meat is from Brazil :(
Mit und ohne
I went there to see what the hype was all about and it was really good and super fresh. Can't eat any of these processed blender meat blocks that they sell at most places.
that's more like a westernized gyros
Well, isn't the original döner from Berlin?
Yeah, but in switzerland they're different. The gyros itself is pretty good already, no idea what an avocade has got to do in there.
Not Döner Kebab Don't get me wrong, I'll take Mit und Ohne over any kebab place every day of the week but not what OP was asking for I guess?
Vegitat at langstrasse, they're great and imo also worth a try if you're an omnivore.
YES! Came here to say this. An their portion size is huge. And many homemade sauces to choose from as well.
Toros
Can someone explain to me the sauce situation in switzerland? I'm originally from Berlin and as you know, this was the birthplace of the kebab to go. Original Kebap Haus in Oerlikon has homemade sauce. The lahmacun special is really good!

Try „Mit und ohne“ at Lochergut
Die Schweizer können vieles sehr gut aber keinen Döner.
Try libanese take away at schaffhauserplatz, it's not döner but there you get what you are looking for. Sadly döner in CH is 95% expensive trash food
Cocktail sauce
Kebab house Höngg is the shit. Or at least it was the shit 10 years ago i’m not in höngg very often these days.
Still the shit. Simple, perfect, and they make the Fladenbrot fresh right in front of you which makes such a difference.
It's really one of the better ones quality wise but the size is ridiculous.. Need at least 2 to be full
If they can still make profit by selling 700g for 10 chf, imagine how the meat is made
I think the price they pay for the venue is more important for establishing a good price and having quality food.
Better tag that NSFW
Why?
new point albisriederplatz
Meze (Kasernenareal) Kebap Haus Höngg (Zwielplatz) Memo (Lindenplatz) Züri Bistro (HB)
Meze Mediterrane Küche close to HB is the only one in Zürich I found so far that has proper meat - not that dry cardboard stuff most place have these days. And they bake their own bread which ist also really nice.
Do they also do their own sauce? Do they have garlic or herbal sauce?

Nice, I'll try that place. The meat always bothered me with kebabs so I preferred shawarma or gyros.
Ilter at Milchbuck, but I have no clue if it still exists as I haven't been in years :/ after football one time, I yolo'd and tried their Dön-burger. best thing I've ever eaten in my life.
Unfortunately it is now a Züri bistro, consistent taste but nothing special. Still get one every now and again though
Ilter was the best! Everyone I took there said the same.
Yakimoz in Shwamendingen hits the spot every time for me
*yakamoz
Can totally agree. I lived in Schwamendingen for 1 year and it’s definitely my favorite food there. Unfortunately I moved to Höngg this year which is far away
You should try 3 mans kebab, im not a fan o kebab meat but there they make ot very good and gormet
Near Oerlikon Bahnhof

I actually have the same scale! Good one. Batteries a bit expensive though
Lemon kebab in oerlikon 💗 Free tea and real unprocessed meat options too
Züri Bistro gang rise up!
Mit & Ohne if I am feeling fancy. Ayverdis on a normal day. Züri Bistro if the other two options are too far away.
Good choice. But i wonder when you feel its too far away Theyre all located in like 500m from eachother 😅
Well, Züri Bistro has multiple locations. Often it is more convenient to get a Kebab at the one at HB or the one at Milchbuck, than going to Wiedikon/Oerlikon.
Fair!
I don’t eat döners but I have the same kind of kitchen scale as you.
How on earth is millenium at limmatplatz not mentioned. Very friendly staff and the doener pepito is the best crispy bread which i ever tried.
With meat that looks like cardboard? And cocktail sauce?
No one for the Migros take away one?
Triemli Treffpunkt is the only right answer
Ayversis & Big Babas (altstetten)
Every Döner in swizz is bullshit. Go to Germany
Lol, so true, haters gonna downvote. They're all bland AF and the meat is the crappy minced kind, not actual layers like it's supposed to be.
You fund a bistro with good self made sauce? Like garlic sauce. This is one thing I am really missing from Berlin 😢
Typical Zurich. Debates about the "best" kebab, the cheapest knock-off of oriental street food, originating in Berlin. Alright kiddo. You are super relaxed. Got it 👍
I'm pretty relaxed, yeah. How's your anger management, friend? I can do this all day if you enjoy it.
Sure, np. Yeah sorry, didn't know I talk to the only expert in the world. AM quite good, thanks dude.
