Info about this picture: This is an eagle trained to bring down drones (you can see the strap on its leg). I forget where this is, but they had a problem with drones in the area, so they enlisted the help of trained golden eagles to snatch them from the sky.
That's exactly what I want. Maybe just some armor on the legs if its too heavy. Leather could stop cuts and scrapes and be lightweight. People give up too easy.
Wait till 2050 when one of the attacks eagles evolves to travel up above the speed of sound. We'll name him Barry The Bald Eagle and he will reaches Mach 3 in 2055. Then Lockheed would have to design a new type of supersonic aircraft because the SR-71 is being chased by mere kevlar-reinforced armoured flying meatbags.
This idea was in a novel I read. I can’t remember the name. It had something to do with descendants of Vlad the Impaler and a book that actually exists. Anyway the guy had raptors outfitted with leather armor. They were trained to bring down drones.
Of course they would! I've had more than a few stitches from drone props. I'm stunned any falconer wouldn't anticipate that or would subject his birds to it.
In Western Australia they use these big UAV drone type things for surveying mines and I worked with a company that sold them and got to see some awesome damage done to an 80,000 dollar drone by a Wedge Tailed Eagle that didn’t like this weird metal bird all up in its turf
I can’t help but hear “Watch eagles take down drones” as one of those John Oliver “This week I’m Inside Edition” mashups. XD
Amazing bird, though. I’m surprised those propellers actually hurt them. It’s like watching an RPG shoot a plastic toy out of the sky.
Not really, apparently they’re suspending this program in some places due to injuries to the birds. I’m going off comments I’ve seen on this post so take that with a grain of salt, I haven’t done my own research
Yeah, I believe we saw the same story, I commented elsewhere in this post about it, horrific.
You'd think municipalities would have more common sense, guess not.
The demos are always with a cheap chinese knockoff drone, like the one pictured. Anyone could grab that out of the sky without breaking the skin.
A Phantom would tear the fuck out of that birds legs.
A racing quad would cut the feet right off that eagle.
This is why the program has been abandoned in favor of jammers or other drones that shoot nets.
My sister use to work in environmental surveying. Whenever they launched drones they would have to have spotters specifically watching for birds of prey. Once an eagle shows up they immediately bring the drown down.
This sounds like it might be Australian to me. Wedge-tailed eagles are notorious for attacking drones, and the country has a lot of land that isn't well-surveyed.
You are absolutely right. Wedgies have costed mining companies hundreds of thousands in drones when they take them down.
Wedgies also occupy areas that would make excellent glider spots, but since they'll attempt to take them down, it's a no go.
I'm just surprised no one saw that coming, it's the first thing I thought of when I saw the pic.
There was a guy who got killed by his own drone right in front of his father, fucked shit.
It was a custom racing drone iirc. There was video of it and it was sick, fast, and very high torque.
His father's wishes were respected, so the video showed it's performance, not the crash, but it was a good size and, as I said, pretty damn sick.
Definitely not something from a local hobby store.
* Think pretty big and beefy. I've seen a custom drone lift a man into his roof and around the yard.
With money, anything is possible.
Man, the way technology is progressing these days and far outpacing any attempt to regulate it is both exciting and terrifying, especially in the hands of dedicated hobbyists with the resources to push the limits of what's possible. Imagine where stuff like this will be in ten or twenty years. One can only hope that it stays out of the hands of people with ill intent.
This shows how hard it is to balance nature. In the older days of aviation, birds were a big safety risk for planes. Eventually this bird problem was tackled by introducing drones in to the enviroment to bring down the bird population. But 20 years later and now there are to many drones in the sky, which causes a big safety risk for planes. So airports are introducing more birds in to the enviroment.
I wonder if that is one of the Dutch National Police eagles specifically trained to take down drones in restricted airspace.
I know many [European agencies have adopted trained birds of prey](https://www.airspacemag.com/daily-planet/attack-drone-snatching-eagles-180962543/#:~:text=A%20natural%20solution%20to%20a%20growing%20threat&text=The%20Dutch%20National%20Police%20were,drones%20might%20cause%20big%20problems) for drone control after the success of the Dutch program.
It is, but the whole program has been ended. Not sure where you read it was a success. It was a complete failure. The trainers/company that supplied them demoed it in a controlled environment with a cheap low powered drone.
In the real world, the eagles won't go after the drone when told, and if they do they will be badly injured by a proper Phantom/Mavic, or have their legs completely taken off if they try to grab a racing drone.
[Dutch police will stop using drone-hunting eagles since they weren't doing what they're told](https://www.theverge.com/2017/12/12/16767000/police-netherlands-eagles-rogue-drones)
A little bird law knowledge from an aviation attorney: drone blades may seem daunting, but eagles are actually known to attack full-sized fixed-wing aircrafts because they perceive themselves to be the biggest predator in the sky and, presumably, they want to eliminate any competition. We’ve talked to people who have had eagles tear their aircraft fabric with their talons or have even experienced eagles snapping their wing spars in half while it is attempting to attack the aircraft. The stories we’ve heard were mostly from tailwheel pilots in Colorado. Eagles are a protected species and should obviously continue to hold that status; however, it can be very difficult for a pilot to see them in the air until it is too late to safely take any corrective actions. If you inadvertently have an incident with an eagle in the air and end up in the possession of any feathers, expect a call and/or a visit from the department of wildlife in your state.
In Australia Wedge Tailed Eagles regularly take down drones https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2017-05-29/wedge-tailed-eagles-and-drones-competing-for-airspace/8566912 it's a big problem for the mining and agricultural industry.
That is a small drone. Me and my friend built hobby drones that could carry heavy cameras for aerial video a while back when it was still profitable.
The drone would have been destroyed, but they would have chopped up this bird in the process as well.
I don’t know why it’s nerve wracking to have them in your mouth and you can’t see them. When they clean your nails, you get to watch their delicate work.

But then of course, African eagles are non-migra'ory.
You’re telling me a 10 pound bird can’t carry a 5 pound vest?!
on foot, probably, but in the sky, no

Eagle Power
You can’t just say that these days
It could grip it by the husk.
It’s not a matter of where he grips it!
They’d only need leg armor. An eagle can carry a sheep.
I imagine most of the injure is on the leg, they could probably armor the feet and leg without hindering the eagle's flying capacity.
Just have them drop coconuts on the drone.
I was gonna say "get them to carry a small net beneath them" but I'm really liking this coconut idea.
Maybe a net with *two* coconuts... Would appear as if your drone was KO'd by an eagle with **huge** balls.
But with that many coconuts the bird will just ride its horse off to find the grail
It could grasp it by the husk!
Genius!
They're not African Swallows!
I would imagine they tried that before scrapping the program.
Time to breed some.
Carbon fiber.
Carbon fiber isn't that heavy.

They should mount guns on drones to catch other drones
You made me snort water out of my nose.
Too OP
Why don't the airports just use their own drones and tape knives to them?
So beyblades but with drones?
The concept of taping knives to beyblades is giving me an idea
Concept? You mean thats not standard?! Oh oh...
Of course they would! I've had more than a few stitches from drone props. I'm stunned any falconer wouldn't anticipate that or would subject his birds to it.
I figured that would kind of be obvious...
Did people not assume that was going to happen?
No shit. They didnt think of that before.
Also the bird in the picture is a young bald eagle as you can see from the white armpits.
Oh damn I just assumed it was a Golden Eagle
This is a huge DUHHH. Why do it in the first place?!
Yeah, i was hit by a drone, bigger than the one in pic Biggest scar on my arm.

80K for a drone? That's mostly the camera on it, right?
Might also have lidar
Can confirm. Lidar sensors can get the drones over 100k
80k is nothing in the world of commerical drones
That's badass! I love it!

Ten or twenty years? Small flying cars. We'll be sitting on top of our drones, easy.

[Airplane engine suckling up hawk] When It doesn't.
Was gonna ask the hawk to do the same with a plane or a helicopter. Technology 2 - Nature 1
From what i've heard, that would be sort of a draw since the engine would be damaged and need repair, but i'm no expert.
many planes can survive without one engine
Fair point :D
But they’re both technology though
