I found this little black beetle and remembered I used to call them penpals when I was little. I would like to know the real name however because when I look up penpal beetle I can’t find anything on it. Central Florida, roughly half an inch

When I was very young, I used to play with these beetles during recess. The only name I have heard for them is “penpal” but when I look online I can’t find these little dudes anywhere. I finally caught one to take pictures of and ask, what is the true name of this beetle species?
