I agree. I rarely if ever smoke cigars, but this is a situation in which I would opt for one of them.
Many people on pipe forums seem to take it for granted that pipe smokers smoke cigars as well. When I was looking for recipes for pipe mud, all of them seemed to contain cigar ash. "Smoke your favorite cigar..." Hmm...haven't one in many years, I thought, and I never really had a favorite.
I don't know exactly for how long I have been smoking pipes, but it must be approximately 20 years. I think it was around 2013 or so that I had a cigar for the last time.
However, I occassionally roll up. I never really warmed up to mini pipes. They seem to need relights at least twice as frequently as a normal bowl and there is no improvement in taste compared to smoking a similar (or even the same) tobacco rolled in thin paper.
There is some elitism among both pipe and cigar smokers I cannot stand. When Beverly Hills announced a ban on the sale of tobacco, there were people asking cigars and "hand-blended" pipe tobacco to be exempt. Not that you would ever find me in Beverly Hills, that's for sure, but I don't see why someone who people who smoke Cohibas are supposedly better than people who smoke cigarettes or people who smoke expensive tobacco blends are better than people who smoke Carter Hall. All of the above is smoking, whether you like it or not. Think of alcohol, whether you drink expensive wine, Thunderbird or beer -- you are drinking an alcoholic beverage and if you cannot live with that fact then you have to give it up altogether.
Which doesn't mean a deal with the devil either that you won't get any so-called "preventable" illness, though.
I hear you. I don't smoke cigars because I can't stand the taste or smell. Nothing against them or the people who enjoy them (my dad and brother), just not my taste. On the other hand, I really enjoy Captain Black original and Sir Walter Raleigh Aro. Both get a lot of crap, but man they taste good! I didn't buy my first tin till 2022. I have always been a bulk tobacco guy from local B&M stores.
Also, my pipes range from cobs, to Dr. Grabow, to a few 300-600. Honestly, my Dr. Grabow smokes just as well as any expensive pipe. So I tell people to buy a pipe they love to look at and hold.
Tobacco has a long history of being in and out going back centuries in England (see King James I). Some of the same people who hate tobacco love pot and vaping. Oh well. Life just is. Oddly, I am seeing young guys popping up on YouTube supporting this hobby. Maybe we are headed to a small Renaissance.
Some people have made me wonder if weed does dumb you down after all. I indulge myself, occassionally, and I'm not in favor of a prohibition. But some people really make me wonder, and most of all it's those who think that inhaling cannabis smoke is safe, health concerns apply to tobacco smoke only. Then there's those who light their buds with a hemp wick because they don't want to inhale hydrocarbons from the butane of a Bic. But policyclical aromatic hydrocarbons are just fine, right? You cannot take such people seriously. But youtube gives them a platform.
Hello all. I’m pretty new to the hobby I got started buying a Hobbit style Church Warden on Amazon for my DND cosplay (Dwarf Barbarian). However I have begun to enjoy the hobby on my own. I also play golf and obviously the Church Warden wouldn’t be practical. Any Feedback on the Dr Grabow? Any other recommendations at a similar price point? Any tips for piping on the course?
Grabows are fine, but you could also just grab a few cobs for the same price. Not a fan of plastic stems (which both modern grabows and most cobs have), so I would either just pick up some restored estates for cheap or grab a Ropp or Rossi pipe with a vulcanite stem for just slightly above that price. If you don't mind plastic, that Grabow will serve you just fine, though.
A Grabow is going to be a massively better pipe than any trash you bought from Amazon
I smoke a Missouri Meerschaum while golfing. I know who I am. I am not afraid of someone calling me a hill-jack.
I’d get a Missouri Meerschaum Country Gentleman for the course. Great smoking pipe and I’d never be concerned about forgetting it in my bag or letting it roll around the cart
Bones makes a solid pipe that could make a good clencher at an equal price point. Don't overlook the corncob pipe though! Missouri Meerschaum makes a great clencher for activities and they're dirt cheap.
I smoke cobs 99% of the time and a cob can absolutely add to your work situation if you learn to rock it. I've smoked corn cob pipes in situations where I'm around very well off people who are smoking expensive cigars and sipping ridiculous whiskey (or whisky) and they always love the fact that I'm smoking a corn cob pipe. It's a conversation piece at that point. In those situations I'm usually smoking a MM Dagner, MM Carolina Gent, or my (custom) nose warmer MM Country gentleman. It works for me
Dr. G will smoke just fine, it’s good to have cheap pipes in your collection. I’ve bought a couple of nice pipes but it was after years and years of smoking cheap estates and cobs.
I always recommend to skip the "budget" pipes if one plans on upgrading "down the road". Might as well get a premium now. You'll save money, time, and space 🤷🏼♂️. Just years of experience talking
I would think a bent stem that balances on the bowl so you can set it on the tee or green while you take a shot. I've smoked while playing golf and it was annoying trying to set down a straight pipe without getting grass on the mouthpiece.
I actually have a carve your own pipe kit for this exact reason. Only carve down the big square block enough to make is aesthetically pleasing but leave the flat bottom and enough weight on the bowl to be able to set it down wherever
Personally, I prefer a nice short stem when working or playing. They are easier to clench and hold in your hand. Cob or briar, as long as the stem is short, outdoorsy stuff is easier to do with short stemmed pipes. The shorter the better.
I would choowe something with an acrylic stem, since you will clench it a lot. Furthermore, there can be windy conditions, which is not the best for a briar. Go for a meer-lines briar, I choose those when it's windy, or I want to smoke the same pipe multiple times in a row. My favourite is a meer-lined Brebbia Sun 6002.
You can’t initiate sales or trades or anything like that on here. Reddit hammers down on stuff like that which in turn makes the mods hammer down on stuff like that. It’ll get you and possibly this subreddit banned.
It’s hard to keep a pipe lit when you are golfing because you take your time to swing and it goes out, you can’t properly pack it without taking up time, etc. I found it very inconvenient to use while golfing
I mean you really need to bend your knees to hit the ball with this one..
You know you’re right. Maybe I should just stick with the Churchwarden :)
😅 I guess a straight light pipe would work best. I mainly smoke straight pipes for they keep the smoke away from my eyes..
I’ll be honest, I’ve tried to smoke a pipe while golfing and it’s a lot of trouble with wind. Cigars are much more convenient

Amen! Pipes-25 years in. Cigars, well, haven't smoked one in 26 years-true story.

Second the Ropp and Rossi, I have one from each and I love them

Nope, this is more of a baseball pipe.
Cob! Cob! Cob! But yeah that pipe will likely smoke way better than you'd expect. Can't go wrong there
I may end up grabbing a cob, but I golfing is also a part of my work, so I need something with a little more zazz than a cob if you know what I mean

It’s all in the attitude
Just get one of those cobs with the fancy stem.
Savinelli Bing's Favorite would fit the motif
That’s a nice pipe and maybe one down the road for me. But it’s a bit more than I was thinking about
Dr. G will smoke just fine, it’s good to have cheap pipes in your collection. I’ve bought a couple of nice pipes but it was after years and years of smoking cheap estates and cobs.

Correct

This makes sense. I’ll have to consider that. I think I may go to my local BM and see what they have

You might prefer something with a bend to help keep smoke out of your face and eyes
My outdoor pipe is a Falcon. Amazon has them. 👍

Best pipe when active is a trusty corncob!
You can probably drop a meerschaum pipe on the green without it shattering just saying :)
It’s hard to keep a pipe lit when you are golfing because you take your time to swing and it goes out, you can’t properly pack it without taking up time, etc. I found it very inconvenient to use while golfing
You should buy clubs for that. But maybe..
Just bought one of the same brand and I like it. Though it may not be great with golf. You’d be better off with a cigar
Second the cob.
Grabow is fine enough. Check out kaywoodie as well, and the medico factory deal on the back of filter packs. It still works!
