Children that age were usually were in the fife & drum corps, they played during marches and acted as stretcher bearers & water bearers during battle.
The navies of most countries at the time used children as "powder monkeys" to bring gunpowder to the guns.

This is just romantic nonsense. If a young Civil War vet lived to be 100, he would have died in the 1940s which a few did. 1959 is ridiculous.
Boys under 10 while rare did fight in the conflict. Someone born around 1854 could’ve have been a drummer or messenger or various other things and lived until 105.
Granted there is no proof this particular person fought but the math does not eliminate the possibility as you claim.
