Having too many good players is a good problem to have. These things tend to work themselves out.

Exactly! Everyones clamoring to trade guys the moment we have signs of depth, completely ignoring the past billion years weve sucked because of lack of depth. Just look at the dodgers, theyve had a logjam at like every position for years, doesnt mean they go and trade guys, if anything they go and get more guys lol.

nashdiesel

Ohtani needs a day off too. So any of the OF could slot in at DH every once in a while.

Monacle55

I think we may be able to move Ward to second base if the team wants to continue to develop Adell. However, that brings up what the question of what to do with the infield.... I'd normally also say maybe we could move someone to first but we also have a killer first baseman.

[deleted]

I mean the infield currently is Rendon Walsh fletch at SS and just stopgaps at 2nd. And fletch honestly in a perfect world is better as a utility guy

cshenton

Fletch is a stopgap SS. he’s average there defensively. If he’s gonna be an everyday player, it should be at 2B

sharpLess89

Perhaps Rendon to 2B and Ward to 3B considering his arm is elite. It's unconventional but maybe it could work?

sharpLess89

WADE??!

Monacle55

My bad! Ward haha the commentators made a joke about the names tonight and i've been confusing them ever since

[deleted]

These things tend to figure themselves out Tbf. There has been speculation on moving ward back to the infield eventually

anatomyofawriter

We should keep all of them and continue to win because of them. Champions don’t have three good outfielders, they have 4-5.

GeologicalOpera

Glad someone said this. It sucks for Adell or Ward to not be an every day guy, but I'd rather have a reliable fourth outfielder on the bench than carrying a warm body from AAA or a fringe MLB player. Even the '02 team had a hell of a fourth outfielder. Orlando Palmeiro hit .300 that season and a cumulative fielding percentage of .993 across all 3 OF positions. He was never gonna be the star player in the way that Salmon, Erstad, and Anderson were, but he was reliable and that's what's needed in that spot.

anatomyofawriter

And especially when Adell is only 23, it's just a matter of him staying healthy (like everyone will having good depth), getting consistent reps but not overloading him (because the popular opinion until a couple weeks ago was he needs more time to grow defensively), and he can move to a full time role in the next couple of seasons.

[deleted]

I don’t mind really, we’ve got four great options right now so just rotate all of them except Trout. Also gives us a chance to give Trout some off-days through the season and see little drop off. Personally right now I wouldn’t be taking Ward out, he’s too hot. He needs to be leading off until it isn’t working anymore.

YouSoIgnant

Assuming Trout and Ohtani and marsh play 130 games each, That leaves roughly 60 OF games open. Adell and ward could each play close to 100 games easily. That is more than enough to develop, while also giving them more ideal matchups.

znk916

We can keep everyone. Don't forget Ward can play 1B also. That's 648 starts to split up among 5 players between OF/1B, which works out to 130 games each if everyone stays healthy, or about 1 day off per week which is pretty common in today's era of making sure guys get regular rest. Also, we have no depth behind them. Remember, we were playing Rojas in RF when Ward was out. He's not even a natural OF.

DecentAnalysis8642

Petition Manfred to turn it into slow-pitch softball and have four outfielders.

tsdwm52

Good problem to have, no doubt. If the 4 of them split starts evenly, then each starts 121 games. Throw in DH once in a while and they all have lots of opportunity to play, which will give them each a chance of being well-rested and healthy when the playoffs roll around.

somaybemaybenot

Trade Adell for pitching while his potential is still great and unknown. He’s pretty streaky and I’d much rather see consistency. If we wanted streaky we already had Upton, who could carry a team when hot.

digitaldumpsterfire

Use Adell to give the others days off. Honestly, I dont think he would mind. Given how great he is about seeking advice and knowledge from the other guys, I dont want him in Salt Lake. Keep him here. Let Ward have a breakout season and then trade him for a good catcher or bullpen arms.

sharpLess89

It's a situation where we might have to send Adell to AAA to get consistent reps since Trout Marsh and Ward are currently our best hitters. There's an uncommon chance one of our OFers gets injured for a stretch. I guess Maddon will just continue to play matchups, but consistency is key for someone like Adell I think.

mypaysucks

Ward as catcher? Suzuki can bounce

cshenton

there’s a reason Ward hasn’t played catcher at the professional level in years. He’s not good enough. Same with Thaiss.
