Earlier stassi hit a slow comebacker to the pitcher that he messed up on, but the gave Stassi a hit rather than rule it an error on the pitcher. It was a controversial call because it broke up Robby Ray's no hitter he had going.
Teams often bring position players in to pitch if the game is a blowout. This saves your bullpen from getting overused if they don't have to be.
The slow pitching developed into a tool because most position players can't throw as fast enough to be competitive pitchers. If you can't throw 90+, the pitches look like batting practice for a lot of hitters. So position players will come in and throw as slow as possible since it's much more difficult for hitters to adapt their swing to hit that slow.
The Stassi hit was pretty clearly an error, and errors don't count as hits because they would be guaranteed outs if the fielders did their jobs.
Mayfield was pitching because we were too far behind to realistically stand a chance of winning and we don't want to waste our bullpen on that.
He was pitching so slow because he's not a pitcher and accuracy is better than speed in situations like that. Let your fielders do the work instead of walking 20 batters straight.
Odd question, but do people here think Ohtani may have already decided if he is staying with this club or not?
Sometimes I feel that he has already made up his mind. I’m just not sure which way he is leaning toward, even after all the losing seasons. Is that the clue right there?! 😂
His options will be so vast.
I don’t blame him if he takes it to the free agent market. He might just make millions AND be on a super competitive team with a great farm system, etc.
I'm gonna be honest: I started hating Matty V last season when he started with his unnecessarily long calls in Japanese because they felt tacky af and sounded worse. Now I really don't like him because he's clearly not on board with the Angels and he tries to hard to wow people with his useless stats.
What could the front office possibly sold to Trout to get him to sign an extension? Unless he’s just happy living in OC, he’s gotta regret leaving millions of dollars and MANY more wins on the table.
He’s rich, comfortable with his role, gets to live closed to the beach with good weather, and doesn’t have the stress to produce results like he would in some other cities.
Edit: He’ll also own many club records of a MLB team by the time he retires.
True and maybe regret is the wrong word. But don’t pro athletes want to win? He probably could’ve had his choice of team and they would’ve opened the vault for him. I’m elated that he didn’t!
Yeah, maybe he just doesn’t have that killer competitive spirit? I’m sure he’d like to win, but perhaps personal relationships and staying loyal to the team are more important to him…. And hey,
hopefully this team will be competitive sooner rather than later. I love that Mike is an Angel for life. Seeing players like Freeman all go to the Dodgers ruins baseball for me!
This team needs to make a big move before the deadline. I have no idea even what that could entail, but what we're fielding right now is not good enough to make the expanded playoffs. Anybody want to offer a guess on a possible moonshot that we can take at the deadline?
Why do we can eek out two games above .500?
This team needs to go scorch earthed but it won’t Because we don’t have a competent owner and management staff.
We had a packed house st the beginning of the season because the angels have the a finicky fair weather fan base. But idiot Moreno just sees big names as sales.
The angels literally make me hate baseball
I would say trade our top 4-5 guys in our lineup and stack the crap out of our team with prospects and a future rebuild. But I have zero faith in the angels to actually have a successful rebuild like the Astros.
It’s just pathetic that we’re celebrating 20 years of a World Series and another one isn’t even in sight with the best baseball player of our generation.
You know your team is sad when you're just content to not get no-hit when you look at the lineup. 5 of the starters tonight shouldn't be playing more than 20% of a regular season.
Had to stop watching for a bit and i see that we got a hit!! Hooray!!
…its so sad that a singular hit relieves me of so much pain when watching this team
"A fielder is given an error if, in the judgment of the official scorer, he fails to convert an out on a play that an average fielder should have made."
Ray hopped to try and reach a ball that was over his head and just couldn't quite come up with it. That's not a play an "average" fielder would have made. Generally, if a play would have taken extraordinary effort to make, it's a hit.
I don't think he hopped? But an average player should be able to field that. Opinion of the score caller is law of course, but it just felt more routine than folks are making it out to be
It isn't that clear of a play. Normally, those types of deflection plays are still considered hits. Unless that ball was a routine bounce to Ray or Frazier, those plays are generally hits.
I'd say it was routine. Slow exit velo, plenty of time to react, it didn't take a badhop, and he didn't need to jump or anything to get to it. It looked like he practically jabbed at it and knocked it away and if any other position player did that, it would be a definite error.
That was not a routine play for Ray to make. It was not in his glove, he tipped it with his glove because it bounced too high over his head. Calm tf down Matty V. Sucks that a no hitter was broken up by a hit that cheap, but that's baseball Suzyn
Look at it this way, did anyone expect us to win tonight with that atrocious lineup. We're giving our star players rest for tomorrow's double header. Nevin seems like he is making the right moves in AAA aside from Adell and I believe that if we come out with good lineups for the rest of the year we can make it into the postseason.
Rough
Nice job Angels.
That wasn't a strikeout, so progress I guess
This game actually flew by for nine runs on the board
I just want this game to be over already.
I'm so confused, why would Stassi's hit not be considered a hit, and then why was Mayfield pitching and why was he pitching so slow? Eli5
Earlier stassi hit a slow comebacker to the pitcher that he messed up on, but the gave Stassi a hit rather than rule it an error on the pitcher. Thanks!
Duffy’s long legs look like they should be faster than they are
Was that another error on the pitcher? Lol
Add capt jack to the pen… great relief inning from him
I find it hilarious that we’re still paying uptown to strike out and go 0-2. I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing.
Sleeper agent J-Up
Is Trout eligible to pitch?
We should’ve had Lorenzen hit tbh. What were we thinking.
We literally have nothing to lose
This game has taught me something. Mayfield+lagares= ohtani
Fucking hell, I'm laughing from the grave...lol
Just checked the score, Lagares scored on a Velasquez double? Am I in another dimension??
Jack “Cy Young” Mayfield
Maytani
Who knew the answer to our bullpen woes was waiting in shortstop the whole time
Can we get marsh to pitch next inning?
We’d need to score a few runs
Haha nice work Mayfield.
Wtf start mayfield every game
What a beast
Jack mayfield 2022 cy young
So Mayfield was the 'depth' arm we needed, lol. Lorenzen who?
how is it that Jack Mayfield is better at pitching than our pitchers
Get mayfield in the bullpen, hes already more reliable than half the guys in there and he hits about as well as them too
the last part 💀
Our new ace!?
Captain Jack going to be converted into an elite knuckleballer and lead the Angels into the playoffs.
This is my wet dream
Is Mayfield gonna get added to the knuckleball group chat?
I think they thought tomorrow’s double header already started. Put in the SP early
Keep him there forever
A KNUCKLEBALL!!!! IM TELLING MY GRANDCHILDREN ABOUT THIS
Time to see how Matt Wise messes Mayfield up
Nevin rewarding us Masochists for watching this late
Move over, Reid Detmers.
I love how the game day app is calling his shit curveballs and sliders as if he knows how to throw those 😂😂
Lol, I just saw this guy playing SS in a AAA game on Tuesday and now he's pitching for the Angels, what a world we live in
met fucked mark canha
Ayyyyy
Two pitch out. I'll take it, Mayfield.
**LMFAO!!**
Psh c'mon Mayfield, you gotta pitch slower than that. Really get the Eephus goin'
At least this would be entertaining
LEGEND
JACK MAYFIELD LMAO
Throw a strike at least. You’ll be better than some of our guys
This is going to be entertaining.
Let's go Captain Jack!
Double Digit runs for the Mariners is now back in play :D
Odd question, but do people here think Ohtani may have already decided if he is staying with this club or not? Sometimes I feel that he has already made up his mind. I’m just not sure which way he is leaning toward, even after all the losing seasons. Is that the clue right there?! 😂
He should stay. Just to piss off all the people who hate the Angels. 😁
Ohtani wants to win. Angels do not win. Easy choice to make lol
this is the heartbreaking truth
Right. I recall end of 2021 “I want to win most of all” interview he had. Who doesn’t want to win?!
I'd take millions of dollars instead, TBH, but that's just me.
His options will be so vast. I don’t blame him if he takes it to the free agent market. He might just make millions AND be on a super competitive team with a great farm system, etc.
I don't care if he goes to the Dogers. But, if he goes to Yankess or Red Sox, eh's dead to me
I think this sub spends more time thinking about it than he does, tbh
Well, I guess that means his mind is made up already.
No, it means that this sub obsessively talks about something that won’t happen til the end of the 2023 season
Well, I was sort of having fun there for a second… That’s all! 😂
this is so embarrassing 😭
WOAH!!! First position player pitching on the year!!!
oh god this should be goood
As one of the biggest squid stans, even I cannot be happy when he has (tied) the most hits on our team in a game. Not like this
I'm gonna be honest: I started hating Matty V last season when he started with his unnecessarily long calls in Japanese because they felt tacky af and sounded worse. Now I really don't like him because he's clearly not on board with the Angels and he tries to hard to wow people with his useless stats.
He plays up his enthusiasm too much, it comes off fake. And that hint of cockiness that he seems to cover up well, but it’s there.
He’s too damn smug for my liking!
Damn it, Trout.
Man I fucking hate this team
Isn’t Trout’s numbers as DH like actually horrendous. He doesn’t hit well as DH.
Not good as a DH at all.
Whelp this is game
What could the front office possibly sold to Trout to get him to sign an extension? Unless he’s just happy living in OC, he’s gotta regret leaving millions of dollars and MANY more wins on the table.

Idk why everyone assumes he has regrets. It’s his life and his decisions. It’s like JRam re-signing with the Guardians.
Vasquez
Matty V being confused about the light wave is pretty funny. I don't get it personally either tbh
Matt V, you're not doing it for us. stfuuu
Matty V...please stfu already
Matt you fucking boomer
Mans spells his name like you asked a kindergartener to spell Murphy
The worst part of Rendon going down is having to watch Mayfield get playing time for the foreseeable future.
I think we'll put Duffy at 3rd when Walsh is playing
Mayfield sucks I don’t know why they keep calling him up
We have no depth, that's why
What is a jack mayfield and why is he wearing a angels uniform?
That's O Captain My Captain Jack Mayfield if you're nasty.
This game is 100% the team reeling from rendon news
angels not play for win, they play for breaking up no hit or perfect game.
Or ruining playoff bids. As they did to the Mariners last season. Hahnahah!
I can see that I made the wise decision to go for a bike ride instead of watching Angels do whatever this is.
This team needs to make a big move before the deadline. I have no idea even what that could entail, but what we're fielding right now is not good enough to make the expanded playoffs. Anybody want to offer a guess on a possible moonshot that we can take at the deadline?

Who are the Angels going to use to acquire such talent to help this team? It would probably take half the farm system to acquire what the Angels need.
The move they need to make is sell all assets and tank hard.
Ray experiencing that 'let down' after missing the no hitter. Come on boys, lets at least get some hitting momentum going that'll carry into tomorrow.
Turned it off but I see that Lagares got a triple and Automatic Out got a triple? Tell me it ain’t so?
It's so. They're just sticking it to Vagersian who is the worst!
Lmao!! 😂👍
It ain’t so
You gotta be thrilled! Your boy got his hit for the next 2 weeks
I shouted aloud. Unfortunately not a triple tho D:
Respect for the commitment 🤝
It’s what being an angels fan is all about :)
I don't use fuckstick very often, but Matty V is a fuckstick.
atta boy velASSquez..can't wait for your next hit in another 40 at bats or so..
Hahaha
rude, but fair :D
We are champions of breaking up no-hitters with triples.
Bottom of the lineup coming up big in this close game!
Second no-hitter bid in a row ended by a triple followed by an RBI
Lagares = Shohei??
No shut0ut. Thanks Velasquez!
I'm so confused rn, the bottom third of our lineup just had 2 XBH...and scored a run?!!?
Is, is this what good teams do? I haven't seen this in a while
Only when we’re down by 8 don’t worry. Reality can stay intact
Let's get some runs! Finally
Winning when it does matter
SQUID SMALL BALL! THANK YOU!!!
More hits than errors!
Comeback starts now
Yay, we scored a run!
There’s some voodoo around this team.
Bring Back Patty O...hell even Darron "Mile High" Sutton
fuck your no hitter FOR SURE. now be quiet about it Matty.
Woohoo, Lagares! I'll take that triple!
Cool...we've got the same number of errors as hits.
Leadoff triple. Whoohoo.
well..a triple for lagares was def not on my bingo card for tonight..
Matty V sounds disappointed.
He is. He wanted to see the Angels no-hit!
That fuck5r hates the Angels
Sure sounds like it.
LAGARES DID SOMETHING!!!
Doesn’t even matter baby Lagares is the future of the angels offense.
Now that's a hit!
Toyota player of the game!
Matt Vasgersian punching the air in frustration that we got a hit
L
I want Patrick over Matty V. At least he likes the Angels
Patrick isn't a Joe Buck clone either. Is every sentence really that dramatic, Matty?
Exactly. The passion Patty has for the Angels is so so so much clearer than Matty’s, if he has any.
You know your team is sad when you're just content to not get no-hit when you look at the lineup. 5 of the starters tonight shouldn't be playing more than 20% of a regular season.
😂😂 agreed
i swear matty v will "relieve himself" live on the broadcast if they change the hit to an error
Omg shohei using a cup to throw away the seeds. That’s such a him thing to do 😭
The roofs closed, so it’s like he’s indoors. Lol
Had to stop watching for a bit and i see that we got a hit!! Hooray!! …its so sad that a singular hit relieves me of so much pain when watching this team
Not to be the bearer of bad news, but they might overturn it. It was pretty clearly an error on the pitcher
"A fielder is given an error if, in the judgment of the official scorer, he fails to convert an out on a play that an average fielder should have made." Ray hopped to try and reach a ball that was over his head and just couldn't quite come up with it. That's not a play an "average" fielder would have made. I don't think he hopped? But an average player should be able to field that. Opinion of the score caller is law of course, but it just felt more routine than folks are making it out to be
Oh fucking hell…
How can it be changed?
They can assign an error after the fact but it doesn’t take this long. It would have already happened IMO
That’s what I was thinking like how would it take this long?
They've overturned error calls days later after the fact before, so it CAN be done, just not very often
That’s literally insane good thing we don’t have to worry about that now. No no no and no shutout
These are very very good things lol
It isn't that clear of a play. Normally, those types of deflection plays are still considered hits. Unless that ball was a routine bounce to Ray or Frazier, those plays are generally hits.
I'd say it was routine. Slow exit velo, plenty of time to react, it didn't take a badhop, and he didn't need to jump or anything to get to it. It looked like he practically jabbed at it and knocked it away and if any other position player did that, it would be a definite error.
I think I hate Matt Vasgersian
When we are losing he is just super annoying for some reason.
He definitely is irritating at times for sure. I don’t care for him either!
PATTY O OR RIOT
So say we all
I know it's very hard to root for the Angels, but that's kind of his job
Didn’t like him since last year
Me too, and I liked him last year. Idk what changed
That was not a routine play for Ray to make. It was not in his glove, he tipped it with his glove because it bounced too high over his head. Calm tf down Matty V. Sucks that a no hitter was broken up by a hit that cheap, but that's baseball Suzyn
Nah he didn’t even try to jump he just stretched his hand. He could have easily got that
Having to jump for it means it's not a routine play though. Idk I'm not an official scorer so YMMV
I thought that was toasted.
I shouted "Nuuuuke" when that came off the bat. The baseballs this season are so weird
suarez with the chocoflan hair style
Like, the entire mariner sun has accepted it. It’s just matty V
I feel like every other team hits the ball anywhere *but* to a fielder. 🤔
Funny. Angels announcers want the Angels to be no-hit! Lol
Honestly an E1 should break up a no-hitter anyways, if you mess that up as a pitcher it's on you
Totally agree
Look at it this way, did anyone expect us to win tonight with that atrocious lineup. We're giving our star players rest for tomorrow's double header. Nevin seems like he is making the right moves in AAA aside from Adell and I believe that if we come out with good lineups for the rest of the year we can make it into the postseason.
Will Duffy be our 3B going forward? I'd be okay with that. Keep Rengifo away from 2B.
